I'm new to the whole wifi business so if my question is stupid then please excuse.

Simply put, i can't get it to connect to a wifi hotspot. It's not protected, it's an open network (even has a star next to its name) but when I try to connect to it, it says 'unable to connect'. Signal quality isn't an issue either - it's always 'good'.

Is this a wifi access point that you have control over? If not, I wonder if it is filtering out unexpected MAC addresses (a globally unique ID that identifies your wireless hardware). Otherwise, it may not be running a DHCP server (a server, which automatically assigns clients an IP address on the network). Though, I'm not sure how the P990i behaves when it is not assigned an IP Address, so the latter possible explanation may not be right depending on how what it does in this situation.

If you can, perhaps consult the people who own the access point?

Yeah so there is the problem then. Your mac address must be in the list of the router/acces point or you won't be allowed to get on board.
