Just out of curiosity, and I'll probably get an answer from the p990 guys, when Opera Mobile 9 comes out, will it be included in an upgrade p1i firmware or do sony usually just stick with the one version of the browser throughout the phones lifespan?

initial version was 8.60 and with latest firmware, it was gradually upgraded to 8.65

i am not sure if the opera 9 is a major upgrade that sony will miss in the firmware upgrade, hope not though

opera was updated at least 3 times during the P990 support period...if opera mobile 9 does not take too long, i thing it will be given to P1 and W960 users via firmware update

It was mostly the build number that was updated, no new major versions so I would assume that the P1i will stick to Opera 8.x.
Opera 9 would be nice but it will probably be part of a new (not yet released) phones features...

yeah, but I'd rather get it as a free firmware update than as a paid-for upgrade.
