Ready for some more "O2 is getting the iPhone" rumours? It seems that O2 is currently updating its infrastructure from GPRS to EDGE.

Nothing majorly newsworthy in that, you might think, until you consider that Apple's iPhone is designed to work on that very same EDGE technology for data access.

This little bombshell, accompanied by a screen shot to prove the upgrade, was revealed by a member of the MacRumours forum in a post yesterday that stated:

"I work at O2 - this message appeared on the intranet yesterday. Why would O2 upgrade their kit from GPRS to EDGE when they're focusing on 3G otherwise?"

Why indeed. As far as rumours and whispers go, O2 could currently be described as the front-runner to win the iPhone contract in the UK. A recent quote from a "major retailer" said: "It is the world's worst kept secret that the have the deal".

The EDGE changeover certainly appears too much of a coincidence to be one, and if true, shatters hopes of a 3G iPhone many have wished for in the UK.

Hi all,

To be honest i really couldn't care how mind blowingly amazing the iPhone is until it gets 3G never mind HSDPA it's real functionality and abilities are going to render it nothing more than a flash looking toy.

I mean 3G is slow compared to HSDPA that is now becoming the norm not the exception and going back to using EDGE is like going back to dial up as opposed to broadband. What a total waste of money by 02 upgrading GPRS to EDGE they would be better of working on their poor 3G network. Mind you unless they do something about their ridiculous Data charges people are likely to only use WiFi any way. Well that's my opinion any way for what's it's worth. If you are only going to use WiFi anyway you may as well just by one of the new iPod touch devices IMO.

that's not right! i think iphone should upgrade their connections to 3G enabled the least, whilst the idea of o2 downgrading to EDGE is a joke

Don't know how popular the iPhone would be without 3G like someone else said, it would just be a flash toy.
How about this Apple may have cut the price of the iPhone this week knowing that a second generation one could pop up next year sporting 3G and bigger memory.

HOWEVER, by upgrading the network with EDGE WILL improve call quality and its STILL good for a quality of Service for 3G even HSDPA. Common Dogmann you of all ppl know that GPRS is closer to dialup than EDGE. At least EDGE you can stream video & audio - unless the network is NOT using DCS 9 algorythm - which is what Cingular in the USA was using (max edge speeds where 80-120mbps) B4 the iPhone came along (now avg across the nation is 180-220kbps - which is night & day).

I will agree its seems like dialup when you've been enjoying the 1st wave of HSDPA (1.8mbps) but Ericsson has been working on increasing EDGE's data speed. Just remember any improvements to an EDGE network on that technology does NOT require any bandwidth licensing via airwave auctions like 3G does. Still though, Apple SHOULD work with SE for that U350 platform for HSDPA & EDGE on Triband or source from the same manufacturer that HTC has been using for years.

The iPhone is appealing to some but for me .... HELL no.

@Prom1

Yeah us folks over this side of the water have well and truly been spoilt as 3G offers 384kbps which IMO was still way to slow and that's from someone that still clearly remembers 9,600 & 14,400kbps.

But really once you experience HSDPA there really is no going back as it is such a major step up from 384kbps to up to 1.8mbps. Now although most device's only support up to 3.6knbps there are new devices coming that will support up 7.2mbps and this is what some of the Networks will have available by the end of the Year.

I can't remember whose quote this is but do feel it is very apt

"I feel the need the need for speed"
