> Preparing For The Ipod Touch
Bookmark topic
Well, as the topic says, ive been gathering info about the iphone, since the ipod touch is identical software wise according to a source inside apple at engadget. So, i think its time for some action. Some of you guys might have seen that there are some iphone hacks out there, to install applications. The process is to basically inject a small SSH server (Secure Shell Server) onto the iphone, so that you can then connect to the iphone like you would to an ftp server. This way, you can extract the apps from it, or add new ones.
I reckon this is the only thing that might need tweaking for the ipod touch, since the injector is made for the iphone. I guess its just a name thing when looking for the ipod on the cable, then the rest is the same. For those that want, here is the application for injecting the server, its called AppTapInstaller:
http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/
Once the server is running, you can install a program to the device called Installer. This basically lets you browse a list of all the available community applications. Some of these are:
Terminal
Finder
TextEdit
Preview
Rss
ApoloIM
NES Emulator
Doom
and the list goes on...
All those apps are native, not web based in any way. Apps popup all the time in the installer, and the installer can also update to the latest version at any time.
Apart from gathering info on this, i also asked a friend that has the iphone to extract the missing apps that apple did not include in the ipod touch, but are in the iphone. These are: Maps, Weather, Stocks, and Notes. These are very standalone, but Mail might not be, so ill just get back to you guys on that

. Since my Touch arives on the 3rd of October according to the apple store, i have no way of testing this, so its all very theoretical at this point, but its a start right?
So this thread is for any future hacks of the ipod touch, and for asking questions or getting help with anything related to the ipod touch.
In the meantime, who is getting an ipod touch here?

yeh, I know lol, but thought it was relevent they use the same os and and you say use a similar design. The fact the iphone is hacked could have a relevence to restrictions put on the ipod touch.

No iphone update has blocked the injection process, so my guess is that apple dont really care at the moment. If they dont care about the iphone app installations, then they will probably not care about the touch either. Also, in the ipod touch' current software state, it is identical to the iphone, nothing has been added to block anything, they have only removed the mail, phone, camera, notes, weather, stocks, and maps applications.
That is why i made this topic, to show the future ipod touch owners what then can possibly do with their device when it is released....

Ok, so run the AppTapInstaller from the link above, and follow the instructions it gives you. Later, open the Installer on your iphone. Restart you phone and you will have a new icon called Installer. Open Installer and from the list install the BSD Subsystem and the OpenSSH server.
Here is a link on how to change the password:
http://smxy.org/iphone-apps/info/OpenSSH.html
Once you have the OpenSSH server on your phone, restart it, and look at the 15th step in this page:
http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_install_ssh_windows.html , its a program that works almost like ftp. The images on that page are for windows, but i think there is a program called Fugu for mac that does the same?
