T300i, T610i, K750i (love this phone dearly), and the P990i, now it'll be the iPhone.
After using the P990i I found myself a bit unable to adjust to a non-smartphone way of life, the P1i was my top choice, and I really do think if there were no iPhone in the picture, I would've been quite happy with the P1i, I really liked playing the demo phone at the SonyStyle store here in NYC. I even made it a point to go play with the P1i before playing with the iPhone so I wouldn't be prejudiced.
I know the iPhone has its own share of flaws, but after playing with one it's really really hard to justify buying the P1i especially when the P1i is at least $100 more (when bought online), at least $200 more if bought retail.
I look forward to the future lineup, hopefully there'll be a great phone that'll lure me back someday.
Until then I'll be off enjoying using Mobile Safari on 802.11G
Thanks for all your help and guidance esato members, you are a really good bunch of people.

Just 2 comment: iPhone is not a smart phone. And at this stage I would not change my p990i for one of those just becouse it looks better and has some "visual advantage". And I also can't be satisfied with an idea that there is only Wi-Fi on iPhone. Therefore I can say only: at that point they tried but other run over them. But, I believe that 2nd generation of iPhone will be much better and maybe than....

@Mm
If you look riffola is based in New York which means with the P1 he can't even get EDGE speeds and at least with the iphone he gets WiFi G with better compatibility with Hot spots and routers of which in New York they are abundant.
So he definitely gains on speed and sorry but the Safari browser is in a completely different league to Opera in any of incarnations. Not every device is perfect for everyone and I'm sure he has looked at the options carefully as to what suits him best especially as he is in the states and the iPhone is designed currently to work best there whilst the P1 isn't.
Although the iPhone may not have MMS or bluetooth file transfer these may not be important to him. Where as push Yahoo and Hotmail straight out the box may offer a big advantage not forgetting the point that it will cost him a lot less for a much more powerful and better specified touchscreen device, in fact currently the iPhone touchscreen is the leader that other touchscreen device need to catch up to.
It may not be the right choice for you but it does seem to be for him and i hope he enjoys it as he has no need to unlock it and can make full use of all it's inbuilt abilities plus the additional Web based apps extras as well as all in the inbuilt functionality. Riffola good luck with your new purchase and i hope you enjoy all it does for you, please let us know how you get on with it once you have it as i am sure many of us will be interested to see how you find it performs for you and if it gives the user experience you expected.

it's true, the iPhone is not a smart phone.
Everyone needs to bear in mind that just because something has a large touch screen it doesn't make it a smart phone.
I've got an iPhone, mainly because couple with my N95, I've got EVERYTHING
Plus I enjoy hacking the unit.
I can't WAIT to colourware mine.

@riffola
If a product doesn't satisfy your needs anymore then it's your choice to either put up with it or make a change.
In this case you've decided for a change. Good luck with your choice and enjoy it.

I know the iPhone is not a smartphone but honestly it's not exactly worth lumping it in the same category as the say the K750i in terms of OS.
Let's look at the parts of the iPhone I know I have to make adjustments for because they are not as well um implemented as

does.
It's a decent phone, there are some weird choices Apple has made. I find it weird that the SIM card is not used as a backup for saving the contacts, but honestly it's not a major issue as the phone is backed up every time I sync it with iTunes to transfer some music.
The iPhone is an okay 2MP non-autofocus camera, but it is nowhere near the "Good enough to print" quality of the K750i. Still for quick shots it'll do. Again it's a case of adjustment.
Video: No video recording, don't care really I rarely used it on the K750i.
The SMS part of the phone is absolutely crappy, no delivery reports is going to be the thing I miss the most. I don't often forward a message but I would like to have that ability, which ain't there. Also being unable to pick and choose which particular message to delete is not great.
Bluetooth: I don't use a bluetooth headset, but that's all the iPhone let's me use, so in effect this will be my first phone since the T610 which won't let me transfer files using bluetooth. It's a bit of a setback but again because I'll be often synching the phone with iTunes, it's not a major loss. Plus thanks to the hacks available, I can SSH into the phone via WiFi.
Now let's look at what I know it does significantly better than the P1i and other things that it does that compare favourably with the P1i.
Design: Thinner, better screen, better visibility in sunlight, multitouch surface, regular headphone jack (ok it's a bit recessed but it's still a standard jack), a hardware switch that puts the phone on silent (how awesome is that? why can't

make one?)
Email: On par if not a tad better than

UIQ3 offering.
Web: Mobile Safari is significantly better then Opera Mini 4, there's really no competition here.
WiFi: 802.11 B and G means I can now actually connect to a lot of the open networks that I come across, because from what I could tell a massive amounts of those networks are now running on G, I had trouble connecting the P990i to most of those open networks.
Edge vs. UMTS, I'm on T-Mobile USA, so Edge is fine, because TMO USA doesn't yet have a 3G network in NYC and I have no idea when it will be in place, or if they are skipping UMTS for something better.
Media Player: With the iPod built in, even the great Walkman phones can't match the experience. This isn't a Rokr with a Walkman type app, this is a full on iPod with everything that comes with one. So that covers audio, video and pictures.
YouTube: Eh I don't see myself using it but hey it's there.
Google Maps: Will come in handy often, wish it had GPS or at least GSM location based markers, but still it's nice to have a smoothly operating Google Map app.
Weather: No need for Handyweather or any other such app, since it's built in.
Stocks: Don't need it, but hey it's there, again no need to install it.
Notes: Can't sync with iTunes yet, but will be able to when the next version of OSX comes out, I am guessing that's when it'll be possible to sync it with the PC too.
Neat lil hardware tricks like the accelerometer (also in the upcoming

phones) and the proximity sensor.
3rd party support: The iPhone is barely 75 days old and it already has better 3rd party applications and applications than the

smartphones do, at least that's my opinion, maybe I am interact with too many geeks here in the US to feel that way, but it really does look like it's the difference between Series 60 and UIQ 3, the iPhone already has a large amount of developers working on it to add functionality to it or to tweak it in various ways.
I would like to mention the glass surface of the touchscreen again, it's just leaps and bounds better to use the glass screen than the plastic ones on the current

line.
So what can a smartphone do that the iPhone can't? Out of the box both have almost similar features, it's easy to expand the smartphone's abilities using apps, but hey guess what you can now do the same with the iPhone, just need to use a hack to upload the programs to the phone.
I still agree that the iPhone is not a smartphone, but it's not really a regular phone either. It's a lot closer to the smartphone lifestyle that I had realised.
It's not a case of

adding a better touchscreen and WiFi G that'll win me over, it's more a case of Apple having fewer bugs out of the box than most of our beloved

phones do when they come out. (Yes I've seen the "91" bug list for the iPhone, a lot of those are minor UI things.) I didn't use the P990i when it was new, I only started to use it after the firmware had already made it somewhat usable. But I did see the various issues I faced with the T610i and K750i at first.
I love

, I do. I just don't agree with the direction they are heading in based on the phones coming down the pipeline. The K850i is a great upgrade for the K750i and I am sure will sell a lot of handsets, heck I wanted one, it's just that after using the P990i I kinda fell into the "I really love having WiFi on my phone" mindset, and it's hard to snap out of it.
It helps me do my work better to be able to access the web from my phone and make any updates I need to make without needing to lug a laptop around. I don't consider using Edge or GPRS here in the US because I'm surrounded by free WiFi in NYC, so why would I bother with a slower connection?
Also I'm not switching to AT&T, I'm staying with T-Mobile. So I need to unlock the iPhone, which is fine and easy enough to do. After unlocking I also will be able to load some 3rd party apps. In my opinion the number of developers working on making applications worth using is already greater than the number of people working to make any kind of UIQ 3 apps. Maybe that's my biased view because I am surrounded by the people who are working on writing apps for the iPhone here in the US.
Anyway I know there are trade-offs to be made but what I get in return is worth it. Plus as I said I really can not justify paying $100 if not more extra for bluetooth file transfers, a better camera, worse touchscreen, worse WiFi, and a physically larger phone.
Once I get the iPhone, I'll live with it for a week or so and then do a follow up here sharing my experience with you. After having lived exclusively in

world, I know I'm in for a period of adjustment, frustration at not being able to do something the way I want to and delight at finding something done in better ways than I was used to.
