Ericsson's new platform for mobile phones will give mobile phones even in the mid price segment turbo-3G upload speed. The company also embraces the mobile TV standrad DVB-H in its platform. Phones build with the new platform will be found in stores during the second half of 2008.


As known, Ericsson has not completely dropped the development of mobile phones. While the development of complete phones is left to the subsidiary Sony Ericsson, the development of mobile phone platforms, electronic packages defining the basic functions a phone gets, remains within the company Ericsson Mobile Platforms. Ericsson's mobile platforms are used by other mobile phone manufacturers as well, not just Sony Ericsson.

The latest platform, U335, is aiming high. Phones built with the platform will get Turbo-3G speeds, not only for download, but also for upload (High Speed Uplink Packet Data, HSUPA).

Ericsson does not state any price for the platform, but emphasizes that unlike previous turbo-3G platforms, which were for PC cards and "advanced phones", this one is for massmarket phones. Mobil guesses that the platform will be used in phones in the price range 300-520 USD.

According to Ericsson the high upload speed will among other things facilitate send of video clips out from the phone. TV is another important function of the platform. Here Ericsson makes a half retreat, beside the technology MBMS for TV over 3G networks, the platform also supports DVB-H and Unicast.

Ericsson has spent lot of resources on the mobile technology MBMS, but EU has lent on DVB-H as the standard for mobile TV in Europe. The fact that Ericsson supports both technologies may imply that one acknowledges itself as beaten.

- U335 is the first platform allowing massproduction of multimedia phones. We expects many consumer models to be based on this platform, says Robert Puscaric, head of Ericsson Mobile Platforms.
