Yes, the p990i can be used with the HBH-DS970. And with great quality aswell.

@kleyzam

Before buying from E-Bay check the threads on this Forum about fake units, as there are a lot of them around. Especially if it is to cheap to be true then it most probably is.

The sound quality is not as good as with wired earplugs like HPM-70 or cans like HPM-85. I find the HBH-DS970 a bit weak, especially when listening to tracks with lots of bass, like Front Line Assembly's album "Hard Wired".

^^^
have you tried using the bt headphone w/ a laptop so see if its the headphones that are at fault of the connection between the p990 and the headset for the lower volume?

Does using the bluetooth headset get rid of the crackling sound that the p990i makes when playing music at a low volume?

My PC has a Bluetake BT 2.0+EDR USB dongle and I paired this with my DS970 and used this for watching movies. No problems and the sound was very good. To me it seems that P990i may not be able to drive the A2DP headset properly.

Do not buy any on eBay from any Chinese or Hong Kong sellers. they are all fake. I am going to put up mines for sale later this week on eBay but only with my P990i.

I've been using the HBH-DS970 with my P990i for some time now and its great. I find the sound quality very good especially if I chose the Mega Bass option in the equilaizer, and turn the volum on the bt and the mobile to max. !!!!!
But I would not recommend e-bay, unless you can buy from seller with a high percentage of positive ratings. Good Luck !!!!!

Can you adjust volume separately on the headset and the phone? For me the volume on the headset adjusts the phone's volume control.

What firmware do you have on your P990i?

Using HBH-DS970 on my P990i I get pretty crappy sound, especially with MegaBass. It sounds like other sounds and vocals drown in parts with heavy bass. If I pair this headset with my PC on the other hand then the sound quality is superb.

(Not to mention what happens if I'm using the Media Player with the DS970 while trying to do other stuff like using the camera. Instant fiasco!)
