When you're using 'night mode' or when in low light, try using the 'Best Pic' mode. Because of aperture and shutterspeed settings at low light, your photos are likely to be blurry.
Re: Fluorescent / incandescent modes.
Just try them out. SUPPOSEDLY, you should use fluorescent mode when under fluorescent light and incandescent when under incandescent light.

Well when shooting in night mode the exposure time is increased, so you should hold really still in order to get the photos right.

Try not to use Auto mode. It's not very good at auto-detecting.
Also, I noticed that when using the flash for close-ups (like in your picture), it would over-expose, so you'd end up with (say) a super bright dog, and a dark background. Try putting your flash on red-eye reduction, as in this camera mode, it flashes twice as it waits longer for the flash reflection to come back to the camera via reflection, and you can end up with a better enlightened picture.
Just try every setting you can think of. You just need to learn what kind of settings work best in your situation. Tedious perhaps, but at least you get to know your camera more!
Good luck!
