I've read in the bugs thread that this is dismissed as not being a fault, that somehow a 'special' character has been selected but that's rubbish. I typed a long text out IDENTICALLY on the P1i and a Nokia 6230i. On the Nokia the text took up 4 text messages and on the P1i it took 9 messages! Now this isn't just an annoyance, it's actually costing me big money if the P1i is indeed sending the same text out as 9 separate messages. Can anyone confirm similar behaviour?

It was personal and I've since deleted it. However, I've just typed a massive text on both phones fully expecting to recreate the fault and I didn't! Grrr! Both texts came out exactly the same in terms of the number of messages taken. So this appears to be an intermittent fault...

@sunking

Type 70 letters (a, b, c or whatever) then one special letter like ë or â on both phones.

The P1i should show 71/2.

What about the 6230i ?

The message that I typed before, where the P1i was showing 9 texts and the 6230i 4 texts, there were no special characters involved at all. Just regular English punctuation such as , - " ' (). It's a real shame I didn't keep it but then it was a rant at my girlfriend so perhaps wouldn't have been very forum-friendly!

I know that adding special characters, for example "ê", will bump up the message count on the P1i. However I noticed this frequently on the P990i, without such characters being in the text. When this occurred, on say a text msg with 300 characters, it could show that the message would be as many as 5 texts, rather than the suspected 2. (The screen would display 300/5.)

So what i used to do is look for anything weird in the text. Sometime by deleting and rewriting characters reduced how many txts it would be to send.

I generally write texts with the stylus, so i assume that i was writing a 'special character' with visually realising it. I noticed that, what looked like spaces and returns (new lines) appeared to be the main causes.

I re-read the text before sending it (I always check for typos etc) and then I read it again whilst typing it out into my 6230i. There were definitely no 'special' characters, I'm absolutely certain. I'll just have to keep an eye on this and report back if I manage to find any solid evidence...

@sunking101

I understand, but do you write them with the stylus on your P1i?
