Hi !
I use WMM but often, it counts down to give me an estimated time, but then counts back up again and it would go on forever!
I think the version is 5.1 but I am using it now so can't check.
Any ideas why ? Is it because it is crap software

or is there another explanation ?
Does anyone use anything else that is free?
Any help appreciated !

You won't get anything decent for free. At least not legally...
The main reason that the counter goes up and down is because it works by regularly taking a snapshot of the number of FLOPS (floating point operations per second, a measure of processing capacity or usage) that the WMM process itself is using at and dividing it by the estimated number of FLOPS required to complete the task.
This means that as your computer does other things at the same time (often background tasks), the WMM process executes less FLOPS since the processor is sharing it's capacity with other processes and so the estimated time to completion goes up. When everything in the background is finished, the WMM process gets nearly all of the processor to itself, and the estimated time goes down again.
More sophisticated systems use mathematical techniques to take this kind of fluctuation into account, but WMM apparently doesn't.
However, it should eventually finish the task no matter what the countdown timer says. If it doesn't, you may have a problem with your PC somewhere because, basic as it is, WMM is pretty stable even with large files.

Cycovision!
Your reply is very informative !!
I do do other tasks such as downloading, replying to email, and so on.
Outlook 2007 is also accessing the exchange server frequently....
then Movie Maker often slows, so I think my best plan is to just run the movie maker and watch tv etc!
I might even give Movie Maker a try with a huge task and see what happens !
edit :- I tried to make one that would be about 2 hours long, the minute counter went to 21,000 hahahahah... so I gave up. I think I will make smaller chapters!
Cycovision, can you recomment very good software and yes, I know it would cost !
Thanks again!

I think he means it needs some speed enhancing upgrades. That's how I'm taking it anyway.
