to the best of my knowledge, these kind of folders are only accessible through a memory card reader or through mass storage mode.

I think you'd need a small hack to do that. The OS is obviously preventing access to it and you can't access it via the PC Suite(which must also block it).
A PC program would do the trick, if it could boot the phone into the same mode it is in when its being updated. This would give access to everythin on the phone, but this would require some reverse engineering of the updater or some serious understanding of the Phone OS to do this
