I got my W810i yesterday from my dad as he got a new upgraded phone as part of his mobile contract, and there is a problem with the gold contacts on the bottom of the phone. I have connected my phone to the charger and to the data cable for the PC and both worked fine. But then I tried plugging my earphones into it and they won't connect. I have tried using 5 different sets of earphones, but none of them work. I have also tried cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser as suggested in another thread, but the problem is still there. Any other ideas?

does nothing happen at all when you plug them in? Is any sound coming out when you play music and does the little headset symbol appear at the top of the screen?

well, they just dont connect, the headphone icon doesn't show up, and if it does it's for literally a second and then goes back off.

Try updating the phone's firmware, see if that makes a difference.

It sounds though like a bit of moisture damage round the Fastport - has your dad ever got it wet, even just slightly like it being used in the rain?

The situation might be improved by taking the phone apart and cleaning the gold contacts on the phone's mainboard itself and inside the fastport bit (it just pulls off, no soldering or anything involved)

I normally use an old toothbrush, or a cloth to clean those contacts on the mainboard, a can of compressed air can be useful for getting crud out of corners too.

If anything needs more than that, something alcohol-based like medical swabs work a treat and no risk of any moisture damage as it evaporates almost immediately

Well, from my experience it's not only the fastport. you also have to clean the headset plug too. Just wipe the headset contact plug with clean cloth.

Is it just those actual headphones you have a problem with?

there's no problem with my headphones, it is just the fastport. I just need to find a screwdriver small enough to take the screws out so I can clean it properly thanks alot for all your help :]
