Hello there,
First of all, I live in the US. I am thinking on getting a Sony Ericsson P1i but I have some questions.
I know the P1i doesn't have EDGE. With that said, which one offers a more stable signal, ATT or T-Mobile? How stable? How bad are the drops? With which carrier the phone behaves better?
I know I won't be able to use its 3G capabilities, but do you know if either ATT or T-Mobile is planning on getting 3G in the P1i's frequency?
Has anyone manage to make Skype work using Wifi on the P1i? How is it?
Has anyone manage to use MSN Messenger using Wifi?
Will the WIfi connect automatically with some pre-sets Hotspots. Say that if I am @ home it will automatically connect to my network and if I am @ work it will connect to the one there?
I am out of contract right now. I love the Fave Friends thing that T-Mobile offers but have been with ATT for a long time.
Thanks for your time and input.

if the carriers are not using 850MHz in your area, the p1i should be ok. Both a&tt and t-mobile probably won't implement their 3G services in 2100/1900MHz. Because the frequency is unavailable when a&tt and t-mobile start to implement the 3G network. a&tt is using 1900/850MHz; T-mobile is using 2100/1700MHz.

I would also like to know about signal coverage in the states and canada since ill be moving to vancouver soon...but as far as i understand right now, as long as your not in an only 850 zone, you'll be fine on any network.
MSn and skype both work fine if you have the clients set up. Fring is the best free one, but yu get 10 software points with the phone so you can buy others as well.
You will have to initially set up the connection, but once setup it will be added to an internet group. Once there, any time your phone needs to access the net, it'll try and access all the connections listed in order in the group. So if one wifi is first, it will try with that, else move onto the next and so on. So if you have home first, it will connect to that, but when you move out of range and try and connect, it will search for the next one.
Word of advice, have a good router and not a cheap one. the phone is just a tad finicky with some of them.

Hello,
Well I've got the P1i and I'm currently on the T-mobile network. I haven't used AT&T before (primairly because they didn't use sim cards due to their CDMA nature), but I've used Cingular before (who was bought by AT&T). Since T-mobile essentially leases Cingulars network (the last time I checked) I'd say the call quality and drops are about the same. The big difference for me is the customer service. I used to have the worst customer service on Ciingular networks. T-mobile reps are so freaking nice and often go out of their way to help customer (like giving bonus minutes ^^).
In terms of networking. I've tried the WiFi function at various places (not HotSpots, just your regular WiFi router type connection). It works pretty well and I have IM+ (sort of like Trillian, an all-in-one chat program) and I can send and receive with no problems. Haven't tried Fring (skype) yet, but I will try it when I install it.
By the way, here's something interesting that I came upon by accident. Apparently T-mobile has a add-on service where they can make a HotSpot at your home. Of course, this is done through a router, and a phone that can handle WiFi, but apparently it supposed to auto switch between the GSM network and the Wifi Hotspot. Also the plan is $9.99 for unlimited calls nationwide. I'd say that's pretty good compared to most VoIp plans. Check it out if ur interested...sure has me considering it...though it's still nice ot have a home phone to use as a decoy hahahahah.

Hmmm,
Good question. It would seem that the P1i should be able to work with this setup since the phones that T-mobile are marketing with this plan look like cheapest phones around that could support Wifi. I don't think you need the router (you could probably use your own), but then you'd probably have to set it up according to their requirements. As for how the hotspot actually works and whether there is some software running on the phone, is anyones guess. If anyone has tried the
hotspot@home or has more information on this, please do share with us all. ^^

Skype using Fring works perfect with me. Though sometisme it seems the connection from the phone may not be fast enough, sometimes. 1 person told me perfect reception when i was far from my router, while another told me they couldn't understand me at all, even while i was close to a router. however, i think my sister had some dl'ing going on

i Currently use the P1i with tmobile and its worked out just fine for me. I use he wifi at several places including work. As far as tmobile hotspot at home service u would be better off talking to tmobile, ask to speak with someone in the tech department as the regular cs operators are not really in the know for those types of questions.
