As part of the new road traffic code, they have decided to ban smoking while driving...
source
what the hell is this world coming to?
I for one don't smoke, but surely it's no worse than me changing gear in my car, or changing CD?
also..
£2,500 fine and 3 points? that's criminal, yes for me doing 57mph in a 30mph zone I get a £60 fine and 3 points?
The government has finally gone mad.
I think my best thing about it is this statement that came from Jim Fitzpatrick (Road Safety Minister)
"If you're lighting up with one hand and have a fag in the other hand then obviously you've not got any hands on the wheel.........."
what a tool....

What the hell!
1. Use one hand to pick up cigarette, put into mouth, while other hand is on the wheel.
2. Whilst cigarette is in mouth pick up lighter and light it, still with other hand on the wheel.
The muppet!

You know Fatreg, my car 07 Astra, came without a fag lighter and ashtrays, smokers have to order a special "smokers pack" which is factory fitted with those options.
Smoking, like anything which detracts from concentration and co-ordination whilst your driving a vehicle SHOULD be discouraged IMO.

I think there's been a slight exaggeration here. There's something about it been inserted into the newest highway code, and it means that you MIGHT get done for driving without due care and attention if you take both hands off the wheel to light a fag, but not necessarily that you'd get done for smoking at the wheel per se.

Im not worried tbh, as long as some sort of fine is placed for having a cigarette in the car, lit or not.
Its the same concept as using a mobile phone so i dont know what the worry is all about, both cause distraction, both disallow the use of a second hand at the wheel (which means you have to be magic to changes the gear and steer with one hand [presuming you dont drive an automatic]), and also both cause great trouble in the car if they're dropped, one may cause a fire, both may cause a crash.

so going by your reasoning, i hope you dont have a phone in your car when driving even if you dont use it
and also if we are going on about distractions, why isnt sat nav banned, listening to the radio and even having passengers as they can all cause distractions
this country is a joke and I for one cant wait until i can move abroad
