Last night, i went to the mall, just looking at some phones when IT caught my attention; A P990i only PHP 13000 (At Least $200usd). i just gotta have this phone! because, all i wanted is a touch screen, wifi, smart phone, with a maximum of PHP15000 or 300usd. before, i wanted an ipod touch, until this....
the question is: is it still a good buy? because i've read many negative comments about bugs, but i'm still not convinced. i just want to ask if the phone really works properly (a few bugs are acceptabe, as log as it doesn't affect the major functions e.g. call, text, internet browsing, wifi).

By all means get the p990! I had one before and it never once hanged. Maybe its because i downloaded the latest firmware. My only gripe about it is that i always lose the stylus. Thats why i'm now using an e61i because it doesnt need a stylus.

the problem is, I'm still a student and still have to save up from my allowance to get 13k. and i'm not sure if I could save that much before it goes "bye-bye". estimation: at least 5 mos. of saving but if i dont get it, oh well, i'd just wait for p1i's price to go down... it may be cheaper, with starting price at 24k? correct me if i'm wrong. but still, there's one thing that p1i doesn't have that p990 has IMO, it's the design. it gives it a sense of sophistication, and I really LOVE that!
and the smartphone feature might be handy when I go off to college...

Surely the real question is, has the P990 ever been a good buy? Many would argue not.

I'm sure the situation has improved a little with the latest firmware, but I think it's fair to say the P990 is still quite flawed, and many wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. The P1 is arguably more sophisticated in design (less plastic) and more importantly it's got the extra memory that the P990 badly needed. There's a reason why the P990 is so cheap now - everyone wants to forget it now.

@Boinng

that's true, but I don't like the keypad where Q and W share one key and so on.. especially that i'm an avid e-mailer, that's why I need a good qwerty keypad. but how many programs can it run simultaneously on its meager 64mb memory? because i'm not much of a multitasker. i could use 2 programs at a time(media player, and browser), but not more than that. does it really use m2 cards? and is it true that it only supports up to 4GB only?

Have you really tried it though? A lot of people assume it must be fiddly, and indeed it can take a little practice, just because it takes time for your brain to adjust to the fact that there are two keys there instead of one - but as a seasoned M600 user (with the same keyboard) I can tell you there is no other qwerty phone I'd switch to, other than the P1 of course. In use, it's very comfortable and very easy to type on, with all the advantages of a "full" qwerty keyboard - but without the width or such tiny keys.

but how many programs can it run simultaneously on its meager 64mb memory? because i'm not much of a multitasker. i could use 2 programs at a time(media player, and browser), but not more than that.

The P990 will just about manage that, but at times - particularly after the memory leak has had a while to take effect - you'll be coming close to the limit. Certainly with a few of the bigger apps open (eg browser, message client and music player) you may find other things shutting down. That might not seem like a problem, but you may find it's more irritating in practice than you expect.

The P1 has enough memory for none of this to ever have to cross your mind.

Not sure which phone you're talking about here... the P990 uses the larger Pro Duo cards, and I think there is some doubt over whether it'll take anything higher than 4GB, not sure though. The P1 takes M2, and as far as I know it's fine with 8GB cards - certainly it's stablemate the W960 has 8GB built in, and obviously has no trouble addressing that.
