Hello,
I've a question..
I've got an external HDD and today I've transferred my 101gb of music to it, do I delete the files off my normal HDD and trust that my external HDD will be ok, or do i use it purely as a back up?
oh, it's a seagate 500gb firewire external HDD if that makes it any difference....

Use it purely as a backup
And don't leave it plugged in all of the time because if a power line gets struck by lightning and kills your mac (heaven forbid) and the drive is plugged in, that could end up dead as well.
I have two external drives and two internal, I keep my music on one internal drive and backed up on the two external drives, only one of which is plugged in at any one time.
Paranoid? Maybe. But having lost 35Gb of music before to a failed hard drive, I'm not taking anymore chances!

Definitely agree with @Cyco, always keep a backup. Even external drives are susceptible to failure, so if you want to keep your data only on an external drive, I'll recommend having at least two of them.

Remember that most external drives can be dismantled and connected internally inside PC's allowing you to access the data on them more reliably.

Nah, don't worry Reg
He was merely pointing out that if you connect the drive up internally, the data transfer will usually be quicker and more reliable than using a USB or firewire caddy.
There's nowt wrong with using external drives, but just take very good care of them and DON'T LEAVE THEM PLUGGED INTO THE COMPUTER OR THE MAINS!

Probably best to unmount the drive first via the operating system before unplugging either the power or the firewire.
At the very least unplug the firewire before the Power.
