Ultra-thin TV to hit the market
An ultra-thin television brighter and crisper than current generation screens will go on sale from Sony in December.
The TV uses organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) to produce the image, resulting in a screen only 3mm thick.
OLED screens are more energy efficient than LCD panels as they do not need a backlight to boost brightness.
But it is difficult and expensive to make large screens using the technology. Sony's first OLED TV costs £850 and has an 11in display.

Yes, its arrived a lot earlier than I imagined it would and it looks great. They reckon we'll see it on the side of fridges and such because of its 'thin-ness'.
I hope the price comes down soon though.

Is the black box attached to this photo part of the TV? If so by the time you integrate it into the main tv housing, then goodbye 3mm!
You may be getting a thin display but at the expense of a big black box

True, but you need a good solid base anyway unless you're going to hang it on the wall. Especially when they start making bigger ones.
Now wouldn't it be really clever if they could make the 3mm thick screen wireless? Base unit at one end of the room, screen at the other? It's not total fantasy because wireless power distribution is already feasible.
Trouble is, you'd probably have to strap an antenna the size of a generator coil onto the back of the screen and everybody in the room would get microwaved but other than that...
