Hey all!

I was wondering whether anyone knew if you could use a Win XP Pro. key with XP Home? Basically, I don't need the functionality of XP Pro, and only have a XP Home disk and my laptop needs a reinstall...I have no reinstall disks for it as some idiot that sold it to me deleted the restore partition!

I may be able to get a Pro disk if it wouldnt work tho. It's an ibm thinkpad t30 - incase anyone has the recovery disk and wouldnt mind sending me an image of it!

There's no way of making a xp pro key work with xp home or vice versa as far as I know. It's one thing that Microsoft got right for a change. Sorry!

i may end up leaving the xp pro in a smallest possible part of the hdd and then just put win 2000 on here as it's good enough for almost everything (and a lot faster!) - only thing that'll drive me nutters is no photoshop cs3..

i thought that ms wouldnt mind you going from their 'professional' --> their 'home' edition. shame that though! i may be able to get a cheap, legal (and I really mean that!) sticker for xp home, so all's not lost!

You can buy the XP pro disks from Ebay (legit not copies) and use your key. It will be cheaper than buying XP Home. XP poduct keys come in various editions though. You cant use an upgrade key with a full edition disk and you cant use a retail key with an oem disk , like a dell one.

If you are planing on buying/getting a WinXP CD, make sure you get the right one, since you can't use an OEM license key with a installation media for volume license and vice versa.
