sg similar happened to me last year... open and close the drive ok, but nothing would boot! in the end the whole unit had to go back and be fixed.

Have you tried resetting BIOS to fail-safe or optimised defaults? Also, try plugging one CD drive in at a time, using both slots in the motherboard one after the other.

Have you installed any virtual CD drive software recently? That can cause problems. It might be worth trying a system restore too if you have it switched on.

System restore doesn't lose data. Well, not saved files, music, photos and such like anyway.

Are the drives showing up in BIOS?

No, a windows system restore doesn't lose your photos, music etc. but it can sometimes stop programs such as itunes working. You have to uninstall and reinstall them again.

You see all of that white writing that appears on the screen when you first switch the computer on? Well that's BIOS doing it's basic checks before starting windows up. If you press a certain key on the keyboard (often 'delete' or 'F1') whilst this is happening, you enter the 'CMOS Setup utility', more commonly known as the 'BIOS setup screen'.

If you look at the list or the instructions at the bottom of the screen, there will be an option to 'load default settings' or something similar. If you select this, save the settings and then exit BIOS, the computer will restart with it's normal settings.

BIOS is a small computer program that makes all of the other components actually work. Without BIOS, you'd just have a box full of microchips that sit there doing nothing. The setup screen allows you to make some low-level changes to how the computer works.

There are several different versions of BIOS with different setup screens so I can't give a step by step guide to loading the defaults. If you're not sure about playing about with BIOS, you'd probably be best leaving it alone although if you can load and save the default settings, it won't do any harm at all.
