"Although not ready for primetime quite yet, Hitachi claims it has developed a prototype four layer Blu-Ray disc capable of holding 100GB of data. While concept
100GB multi-layer discs from companies such as TDK and Panasonic have been announced before, they have always required a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc. Hitachi, however, claims that current Blu-ray drives would only require a firmware upgrade to be compatible with the new disc.
Hitachi's experimental model of the quad-layer Blu-ray Disc
The manufacturer is reportedly working to stabilize signal quality before considering a commercial roll-out for the new discs, and is also working on an eight-layer variant of the technology, which would yield a Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200GB."

IMO they would have to be priced somewhere around or cheaper than 100-200 gb hdd's or these disks would prove to be a no sell.

they always start expensive then get cheaper as the penetrate the market and economies of scale bring production costs down.
I remember when the first CDR's came out, blanks were $100 and cd burners were several thousand dollars. CD capacity was 650MB. These weren't even rewritable. At the time the common hard drive drive size was about 1GB and cost about $200.
When DVD first came out, rewritable's were about $20-30. Now they are a couple of dollars.

I can't help wondering how long they'll remain stabe for, with that amount of data on a small disc you'd be scared of even getting the tinyest scratch.
