I think approx £1 in every 20 £ coins is counterfeit, here's an example of what I have in my pocket currently.
The coin on the left is genuine.
Note the coin on the right has very poor writing on the edge.
Be aware next time you have some change given to you!

To be honest, I only noticed this morning. It was i my change from my Tesco shopping last night. I just glanced to see I had 3 gold coins in my change and a couple of silver, that seemed about right so it all went in the pocket.
My G/f had a dodgy £ coin too.

I have just come back from the shop where they had no fivers and she gave me 8 pound coins back and on of them was a fake £1, Exactly the same as the one on the right - buggers.

Isnt the coin on the right a scottish £1 coin? It could still be a fake.
Edit: Its actually from Northern Ireland.

Well it looks like different design to the rest but I am beginning to suspect its just well worn.
The milling around the edge is a lot better than the one pictured, but the reverse side is just as tatty.

The one you suspect is well worn is a 2001 coin, the genuine coin is 1983. Which coin should look the most worn? You can also tell the the fake coin is a cast, not stamped as a minted coin should be. On close inspection I can see it is definately counterfeit.
By the look's of the dodgy coin it has been in circulation as a £1 coin for a while, I'm in 2 minds what to do with it. Do I try to spend it, or shall I drill it and use it as a supermarket trolly token on my keyring?
