Hi, have been looking in to the whole deal of changing the startpage of the built in Opera browser and it seems that the startpage is the bookmark that's highest up in the list of the browsers bookmarks. The ones preinstalled by Sony Ericsson is uninstallable, and so is the ones that is installed by the OTA Settings recieved by your service provider.
I figured that I needed to, somehow, send out customized OTA Settings to my phone, with my own preferred startpage specified.
This is how I went about:
1. I downloaded a trial version of NowSMS:
http://www.ihub.com/Download%20Trial.htm
2. I connected my P1i in telephone mode, and added the installed modem as SMSC in MySMS. (GSM Phone or Modem option)
3. I started both services under the Service-tab of MySMS
4. I pointed my browser to:
http://127.0.0.1:8800/
5. I went to the Send OMA OTA Settings (OMA Provisioning Content)-alternative
6. I filled in the information I wanted in my customized internet-account and what number to send it to (my number, of course)
7. I had to fill in the "User PIN"-setting and set the PIN to "1111" in order for it to work.
8. I accepted the settings recieved by my phone.
9. I deleted the account from the phone, since it was only the bookmark setting I was after anyway.
I now have my favourite news site as a start page in the built in Opera on my P1i. I hope you can get it to work as well.
I hope I can help some people with this thread!

Thank you for the post, at least there's a way.
but... easy?
in Opera Mobile for S60, there are options to set the browsers home page:
1. User-defined (you have to enter the url/filepath)
2. Original
3. Current page
now that's pretty
e (no asy)
no pun intended... have a nice day

Holy Schnikies! I just want a default page. Well, at least we can do it now, but why do they make it so hard? Sounds like Google wants to know how many UIQ/Opera Mobile users are searching.

Well the Google start page is stored locally on the phone memory in P1i. So Google can't collect any information except if you use their search engine.

Au contraire my friend. The search string submitted to Google includes the browser. All search engines do that really. On th P1i, the default string, as should be on all other SE UIQ3 phones is:
http://www.google.com/xhtml?q[....]-sonyericsson&channel=bm&hl=en
where X is your search string. Conversely on desktops, client would: client=opera, for example. But SE by default come with Opera Mobile. And really, Opera Mobile, Opera Mini, and "TeaShark" are the only browsers that work on UIQ3 as far as I'm aware anyway, so regardless, Google knows what you're using; SE phone. If anything is sent before hand, such as the homepge search that's stored on the handset sends through wap.sonyericsson.com.... what info is sent in that string I'm not sure as I can't see it all, but regardless, someone is seeing your browser.
err yes, unless you use their search engine [didn't see that]
