Anyone with photographic bias:-

Why does it need a mechanical lens cover when there is fixed glass cover?
Does the fixed glass cover distort the picture?
But will it when smeared?
And when scratched (inevitable)?

In short the k800, clumsy, but lens protected.

Thoughts?

The mechanical cover is there to protect the lens from continuous direct sunlight exposure.
The fixed glass layer is there to protect the camera from dust and other particles.
The smear won't affect the pictures, but idk about scratches.

Slightly comforting. But I think I preferred the solid defense of the slider on my k800 and Sony Dsc9.

Thanks for the answer though

A few weeks on has anyone suffered scratches on the fixed glass lens cover and does it affect the photos?

Have had my k850 for over a week now, and I think the lens glass works fine, little bit annoying to clean it a little more often, but it works fine for me. For me it looks like it is hard to scratch it, but have of course not tried

But I allready have got a couple of marks in the glossy back :S
So I am really looking for a Ipod sock for my phone
Just to bad you have to buy the whole pack with six socks :@

The extra air/plastic plastic/air transitions will reduce contrast in the image, especially when there's a light source from the side similar to the effect the ubiquitous 'protective' uv filter has in conventional photography.
An extra glass/air surface always adds extra distortion in some form (however minute it may be)

That is effect is clearly visible in the outdoor pictures i've taken so far.

the bad news is that some members here in Esato have reported to have seen dust specs appear behind their k850i glass lenses...

Nothing beats a proper lense cover you can actually remove when camera is in use. It, along with the lack of play button is one of those bad judgement calls by SE on the K850 ergonomics.

Ain't there Mineral Glass in the lens area? So it won't scratch? I'm sure I've read that somewhere....

Anyways. Has the K850i myself, and no scratches so far.
