I am new to this OS and the Sony Ericsson P1i is my first Symbian phone.

And to be honest I don't like the OS.

1. Contacts phone numbers cannot handle '()' or '.' in the number.
2. The default contact phone numbers are not labeled wither (h) or (w) so what is it?
3. The default contact address is (h) and not their (w) work address, this is a business phone!!
4. Wi-Fi does not automatically attach to pre-configured wireless networks, you have to do this manually.
5. I add all my contact with their country code +xxx because 99% of my contacts are foreign, people calling locally are not recognized from the phone book cuz. My old Sony Ericsson K610i did not have this problem.
6. Battery gauge does not work correctly.
7. RSS feeds does not support SlashDot!
8. RSS feeds does not have a link to the original online story so I can browse to the story, my K610i did have this.

1) No, I can't say it does. It is a numeric field and Symbian applies some error checking to characters that go in. You can only add characters that can actually be dialed from the phone app. Seems like a sensible idea to me.

2) Its for when you just have 1 number for a contact. This can be changed by simply clicking more -> add field and then selecting the numbers and types of number you are going to use for the contact.

3) This is configurable - again edit the contact, click more -> preferred number

4) This would require the wlan to be continuously scanning for networks. I do not know of any mobile phone doing this at the moment, windows does this when the wlan is first enabled and then stops. UIQ doesn't (can't say for s60, but i don't think that does either). If you setup an account for the wlan in question you can connect to it without scanning, simply enable wlan and try browsing the net. The phone will test each acount listed in the internet group in turn to connect to it.

5) I have never seen this problem. Can you give an example?

6) How, exactly, is it not working? It is possible you have an old firmware, you can update this yourself using the Update service from the sony ericsson website.

7) Never tried to add a slashdot feed, so I cannot comment.

8.) When viewing an item, click more -> read more. This open the web browser and load the page the item links to.

1) I think it is just plain stupid to treat the phone number field as numeric and not accept widely accepted telephone number separators. Why do other phones, including WinOS handle this ok, why does Symbian think everyone else is wrong, when I cannot think of any other software product handling telephone numbers in this way.

2) I know I can add more fields to my contacts, but this phone is aimed as a business tool. So it would make sense to have the default fields as the work fields and not the home fields.

Adding these (w) fields every time I add a contact is time consuming and very annoying to do.

3) I know about the preferred number, this was connected with my first comment about the default contact telephone numbers when adding new contacts.

4) The iPhone does this with its Wi-Fi option.

5) When I get an international call the country code is included in the number so the phone can find the entry in the contacts list. For in-country calls the international dialing code is not included, but all other phones are smart enough to work this out and still find the correct phone book entry.

At the moment this Symbian OS does not add the international dialing code when searching so it does not find the phone book entry.

This is the first phone I have experienced this with.

6) The battery Icon does not correctly reflect the % battery left if you tap the battery gauge icon.

1) What characters are you expecting to be able to input? The telephone number fields accept +*#1234567890p as valid characters

2) if you are only adding one number then it has no tag by default. If adding more than one number you can then select what type of number to add it too, myself I simply place all work/business related contacts into a folder, I find it easy enough that way.

3) unfortunately there is, at present, no way to change the default number type to add.

4) Like i said, the p1 will attempt to connect to any available wlan when it needs a data connection, when it doesn't it disconnects. I believe this is a power saving measure on SEs part.

5) I really can't say i've noticed this before, but I see what you mean.

6) I know the gauge goes down in stages, rather than smoothly, is that what you mean? all SEs i've had have done that.....

All my contacts are stored with country code added to their number, in-country or foreign. My P1i recognices all of them, local or international. Is this what you mean doesn't work?

Mine can (at least the '()' part, haven't tried '.')!
I didn't add the phone numbers to my contacts using the phone so I cannot comment on that part, I simply synchronized my contacts with outlook in which I had them in that format.

Out of curiosity how would '.' be used in a phone number? I have never seen this kind of notation.

Actually I just tried to add '(' using the phone now and it seems to work. Maybe I misunderstood your problem, but it seems to work fine for me. Could you elaborate a little on the problem?

I've used a '.' to pad out the telephone numbers for years and with all the Ericsson and Sony Ericsson phones I have owned and used there has never been a problem with this. I think I will just have to change how I do this, I will try using ' ' instead.

Padding out the telephone number makes it easier to read when using another phone or reading it out to someone else. Maybe the user guide needs to clearly explain how this works on the P1i. My problem really.

Does anyones battery register 100% or fully charged. My P1i only reaches 98% after a full evenings charge. I am still getting very poor battery life, yesterday after some moderate usage I had to recharge late afternoon!!

I have been using the phone for 10mins and it has gone from 98% to 97%.

Do I have a faulty battery?

I think most of the problems are down this being my first Symbian phone. But it is worrying when the first impressions are so negative when the OS does seem to be rather good.

Anyway i'll keep plugging on this this new phone.

1. Where does Bluetooth store files that have been receieved, I just sent the PDF user guide but cannot find it anywhere.

2. Has SR given any insight to why they did not include EDGE?

Thanks for all the replies to my post, it is interesting.

Oh i see. I guess that in the non-symbian SE phones the OS uses the '.' as a pause or something.

I myself have never managed to get my battery to 100% it always gets as far as 99% and no further. I think this is actually a firmware issue myself, it's simply assuming the total capacity of the battery is actually slightly higher than it really is.

As to your battery life, do you leave your wlan on all the time? and connected? Also if you have your 3g on, are you in a good reception area? The p1 will bend over backwards to maintain a 3g signal if it can, wearing the battery out in the process. I myself have the p1 in GSM only, I use wlan when I want high speed internet, and I get three days from the battery with moderate usage.

All incoming bluetooth files are stored as messages in your inbox.

Why not edge? You might as well ask how long is a piece of string. We'll never know. My guess is that they saw Europe as the primary market and opted of UTMS instead. Maybe it was to keep the price down, maybe the RD budget didn't get that far. You'll never know, the rest of us would like to know why the same 208mhz processor they used in the 910, why wifi b and not g, why can't se ever ever EVER bother to build a profiles system into the p series when motorola can for the z8, yes we all have a few pointed questions for SE.
