When I flew on Easyjet recently I was able to use my phone in flight-mode and I only had to switch it off for take-off and landing.
If full use was allowed though I would like 'quite-zones' like they have on some trains. I wouldn't want to be coming home on a late flight tired with someone jabbering away in the seat next to me about how they drank themselves silly all night every night and got lost for 4 days.

Qantas currently allow calls until the door shuts and then again once the aircraft is off the runway after landing, which is better than BA who don't allow calls once the door is shut until the engines shut down after landing
both allow flight mode use once seat belt sign is off until the plane starts descending when all electronic devices must be off

Although it seems to of taken a long time to happen it is definitely possible, great now on your 12 hour journey who can have some shouting
"YEAH I'M ON A PLANE REALLY WE ARE OVER THE SOME MOUNTAINS, NO REALLY WE ARE, I'LL TAKE A PICTURE AND TEXT IT TO YOU, SO WHAT YOU DOING , NO WAY, AWESOME THEY DIDN'T DID THEY" etc etc for a few hours.
Possibly the best reason to justify flying First class although that may not be a guarantee of silence either, and could be the start of a whole new spate of Air rage.

So I cant get a 3g signal in my town, but t 35,000ft no problems !!

On the US airlines you are aloud to use the your Mobile (Sorry Cellphone
) once the plane has landed

This is the statement.
Once the aircraft reaches 3,000 metres, the system may be switched on by the cabin crew.
2G (GSM) phones will be able to use the system for data, voice and text services. If the service is successful, it could be extended to 3G.

That's not on all US airlines. When I landed on a United flight at Washington D.C, we were told not to switch phones on until we were off the plane!
