in all the preview videos on the web, the reviewer is fumbling between stylus, scrollwheel, keypad and fingernail to access the various wonderful functions on the phone.
ex. (unless its works different from my w950) there no way to quickly reply a sms using T9 using just the thumb on one hand because the scrollwheel/stylus is used to select the suggested words.
at least they made the touchscreen flush w the keypad and moved the back button to the front to improve one-handed use but its probably not enough.
sadly it could have been avoided if there was a dpad (unless it was a UIQ limitation).

As for messaging i would agree it is not user friendly, but for multimedia this is a market hit

remember P990? it can be used with the flip keypad alone

It can't fail (or succeed) until it's actually released. By that time everyone else will have passed it by and they'll come to market with a passé mobile.

that's why its so frustrating to see.
it has fm radio, keypad, scrollwheel, video calls , installable software etc etc advantage over the iPhone and a touchscreen over the N95 to be a big hit but yet it will be hampered by its awkwardness during normal phone use.

Ive used the W960,and found it absolutely user-friendly when typing a message, but thats because i dont use T9, just multi-tap. And i find it a lot easier to just tap what i want to open on the screen than having to keep clicking on navi pad to get there. I prefer W960 to my N80. But thats my opinion

i think the argument rests solely on the T9 aspect of the phone... you can turn it off if it bugs you. otherwise, use it. it is there built-in anyway.

on the p1 you simply use the left and right keys next to space to select different words on the predictive text list. Not sure how they are gonna do that on the 960. Maybe with the * and # keys (which are what the left and right keys are on the p1's numeric entry mode).
Otherwise i'd just tap the screen with my thumb myself, shouldn't think it'll be that big an issue.

I think it's not a mather of user friendliness, it is a expensive walkmanphone and it will be a status symbol, i like to have phones that many will not afford, to have a phone that everyone else have is just plain boring.
but the T9 aspect seems worring, the tapping i gave up years ago it's so slow to write without it and text like 2000 sms each month and tapping would make that take forever
but i will buy it anyway, as soon as i get the founds =)

This does seem like a major oversight; T9 is obviously the primary input method on the phone, and users of a posh Walkman phone are likely to want to text easily. On the P1 this was never such an issue since with the Qwerty you just type exactly what you want without any real need for predictive text (although it's a handy extra) but on the W960 that's not an option.
