Take a look at this screenshot of the BBC News page's most popular stories:

What's wrong with it? Nothing really. Except that apparently, a story about Sharon Osbourne walking out of an X Factor show is obviously more worthy of a read than a report about people losing their lives.

The respective 'popularity' of these two stories and hence their relative positions on the list has, at the time of posting, remained the same for over four hours.

What on earth is happening to us, eh?

Because, as horrifying as I'm sure it sounds, although death is not a nice subject, not everyone wants to read about it. I'm sure more people would tune in on a Saturday night to watch an entertaining show like The X-Factor than sit for an hour and be depressed about something that is yes very sad and very tragic but at the same time wholey depressing.

True. But it's hardly a responsible attitude to take, is it? Just shut your eyes and pretend it never happens...

Personally I can't think of anything more depressing than Sharon Osbourne and The X factor but that's a different story

I'd have thought the X Factor wouldn't even be on there, being an ITV program. But yes people dying is tragic and shouldn't be below it.

It's not just the fact that people are dying. This is the BBC News website, not the entertainment section, and the crisis on the Turkish border is something that could potentially effect just about all of us one way or another.

But not as much as Sharon can, so it seems

All it is stating is that isthe most read, so it isdown to whoevere is reading it and not the BBC, unless you would prefer that they "rig it" and list bogus hits.

I think people are missing the point...

Yes, it is the most read story. What I'm asking is, 'is it right that it's more read than something that is, in my view at least, a much more serious story?'

Of course I'm not suggesting that the BBC should rig it, ffs. Do you think I'm thick or something?

Lighten up, that was a light hearted dig at the BBC over it's phone rigging.

@Cyco

Whilst I agree with the point you are trying to make, unfortunately your source isn't very reliable!

If you visit this page the graph shows that between 13:00 and 14:00 the Osbourne story was the most popular, but as news broke of the Turkey border crash that has been the most popular every hour since!!

Regards,
Nanu
