When I 'enable' WiFi the 'scan' key isn't illuminated, ie scanning for networks isn't an option. This has only just happened and a reboot hasn't sorted it. WTF?

I sometimes have that problem too. One way in which i "fix" it that isn't as drastic as pulling out the battery, is to go to "More" and select "Find SSID". Key in anything and do a search. After this. Disable the WLAN and enabled it. The "Scan" option should be available again.
