Electronics giant Samsung has shown off what it claims is the world's most powerful chip for use in memory cards.

The 64 gigabit (Gb) chips could be used to make flash memory, commonly used in MP3 players, capable of holding the equivalent of 80 DVDs, the firm said.

which probably means we will see a new architecture for SD and MS memory soonish (currently max theoretical on existing architecture is 32GB).

This will mean new cards with no backwards compatibility (will need new devices to read them)

SD micro has just gone through this with 2GB limit (needed sdhc to go higher), but Memory Stick Pro format has gone from 128MB and will go all the way to 32GB with full backwards and forwards compatibility.

SDHC will now last untill 32GB also, so logically once the 32GB limit is reached a new standard for both SD and MS will need to be introduced.

I think it is highly possible that a new architecture of mem cards will be available. As for the Baclwards compatibility I dont know what they will do. However it is very essential for it to be backwards copatible. If you consider the information in the above post especially when it comes to micro cards, it looks like there wil be a problem with most phone users.

lol. 64 gigabit is 8 gigabyte only.

These memory cards are usually MCM's.So many chips are bolted together for higher capacities.
It'd take another year and a half tho..

It may be possible for the current cards to be read in the new devices, but new cards will not be readable in current devices. (like MSDP devices can still read MSD cards, but not vice versa)

This is because the current MSDP and SDHC architecture can only address up to 32GB of memory space. You can't make hardware compatibility retrospective

unless it's just a typo, it's not much. sony Memory sticks have 32GB theoretical capacity.

no it's 64Gbit, but the current limitation of chip sizes mean you can't fit enough chips on a memory cards to makeup more than 16 or maybe 32GB max. So before the architecture runs out, these chips will allow sandisk to produce 16 and 32GB MSDP and SDHC memory cards (if this can't be done already with existing techniques). However since the new chips will also allow up to 128GB memory cards, a new architecture will need to be introduced to take full advantage of the new chip sizes.

yes but thats per chip. you use 2, 4 or even 8 chips in a card and you have 64Gb!
