It appears to be an issue with PC suite, lots of people have had it.

Firstly, try using a different USB port.

If that fails, try running the backup without backing up the unified inbox.

Unfortunately chaning usb ports or restarting the app doesnt work.

How strange.

Surely symbian should have a generic uiq backup utility out there?

One or more of the applications from 3rd party does not respond correctly to the question what to backup on behalf of that program.

To be able to make a backup with 3rd party applications selected you need to uninstall the programs that dont respond to the question.

I disabled 3rd party apps, and 3rd party media files - unfortunately its still failing, this time on settings :-/

If any sony guys are reading this - maybe you can identify how to re-enable clean backups?

All I did was put in a new Media card with nothing on it, still!

I remain convinced that its a PC Suite problem. Do you have the latest version?

Otherwise you could try a clean install of the pc suite & the drivers.

Also, check your m-router settings, try disabling all other connections apart from usb.

You should use the search as there were countless of issues on the same subject with P990i. What you should do is uncheck unified inbox (which means you will loose messages) and if that doesn't work, uncheck 3rd party app and it'll work.

I had the same problem. It wouldn't do a backup until i unchecked the 3rd party applications on the phone. The tragic thing is, after doing an update, none of my backups would restore either (even the ones without the 3rd party apps). Sigh.. I too think it's an issue with the PC Suite software..

Had the same troubles. If I delete older backups and uncheck / check all the items to back up it works. I guess the trick with the delete of older backups did it. But it looks like a bug.
