> VW BlueMotion Polo : 74mpg, no tax

74mpg

no tax
BlueMotion is Volkswagen’s innovative response to concerns about the impact of driving on the environment. This advanced technology offers outstanding fuel economy with a marked cut in CO2 emissions. In fact, the BlueMotion Polo, the first of this new generation of super-efficient cars has sufficiently low emissions that you pay no road tax at all.
Drive responsibly
We need our cars, but we're aware of the impact driving has on global warming. It’s a difficult dilemma. Volkswagen’s response is the energy-saving BlueMotion which is the first in a long line of technological developments which helps reduce the impact the conventional combustion engine has on our environment.
The BlueMotion badge will signal the most fuel-efficient model in each range and makes its debut on the new BlueMotion Polo. This innovative car can travel more than 700 miles on one tank of fuel, delivers an outstanding 74.3mpg on the combined cycle and has a CO2 output of just 99g/km, making it the most efficient car of its class.
Making cars with care
BlueMotion is the natural next step in Volkswagen’s pledge to make cars which minimise impact on the environment at every stage:
In the factory
Using recycled and recyclable materials where possible and environmentally friendly construction techniques.
On the road
A car has the biggest impact while on the road, so the Volkswagen engineers are developing models that use less fuel, release fewer harmful emissions and last longer.
Recycling
Volkswagen assist the environmentally friendly recovery of their cars at the end of their (long) lives, take back a large range of used parts and remanufacture on an industrial scale.
Advancing technology
BlueMotion has been developed on the Polo. At its heart is an advanced modified 80PS 1.4-litre TDI engine, mated to a bespoke 5-speed gearbox with longer ratios to reduce engine speeds and improve economy. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) helps cut emissions further*.
Lighter materials have been used wherever possible, coupled with slick aerodynamics. A smoother bumper and front grille, plus small spoiler on the rear windscreen, all help to reduce drag. And the special lightweight 14” alloy wheels are fitted with low rolling resistance tyres. Of course, like all Polos, the BlueMotion Polo offers lots of style and an agile performance.

Ensuring safety and comfort
These weight-saving measures don’t come at the expense of safety or comfort. The BlueMotion Polo carries a 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating for adult occupant protection. It is fitted with twin front and side airbags for driver and front passenger, ABS with brake assist and 2 ISOFIX child seat fixings. Comfort levels are also high – standard features include:
▪ Multifunction computer
▪ Central locking
▪ Electric front windows (and rear on 5-door model)
▪ Radio/CD player with 4 speakers
Across the range
BlueMotion technology will be available soon in a line-up of new models across the range. The BlueMotion Passat will be launched in Spring next year with the saloon returning impressive 55.4mpg and a reduced CO2 output of 136g/km. And watch out for the BlueMotion version of our legendary Golf, which like the Polo and Passat will return impressive fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions. Pricing and specification will be announced closer to the launch in early 2008. BlueMotion versions of Golf Plus, Golf Estate, Jetta and Touran will follow.
The verdict
The new BlueMotion Polo is brilliant proof that economy and lower emissions need not be achieved at the expense of style and driving pleasure. You’ll love the performance of this agile supermini and with prices starting from just £11,995 rrp its frugal fuel consumption won’t be the only thing your pocket will notice. Best of all, you’ll know that you’re helping do your bit for a greener environment.

VW are going to be doing/have done a Golf BlueMotion too.
That ducks under 120gm/km CO2 so its CC exempt.

The performance is still respectable considering its fuel-sipping consumption. Looks good to me.
