Struggling Swedish-Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson will launch its flagship P800 camera-phone in eight countries in Europe and the Middle East on schedule next week, spokesman Peter Bodor said on Thursday.
Bodor's comments were a clarification of remarks by a Sony Ericsson official on Wednesday that next week's launch -- already delayed from the third quarter -- would be limited to only three countries in the sales-sensitive Christmas season.
Bodor said the phone would be available in shops in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Italy and Greece as well as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong. It could also be available in some African countries, he said.
"It will not be in big volumes but it will be in shops in the major cities and volumes will follow in January and February," Bodor told Reuters.
The limited rollout means Sony Ericsson may not take full advantage of the Christmas shopping spree, possibly losing ground to successful competitors such as Nokia (news - web sites), which will have introduced 30 new models this year.
The choice of countries for the limited rollout was influenced by the availability of service centers and co-operation with local mobile operators, Bodor said.
Sony Ericsson was created last October from the loss-making units of telecoms equipment maker Ericsson and consumer electronics giant Sony and had initially planned to have the P800 model in shops in the third quarter.
It said in September the phone, a combination of a digital camera, mobile phone and a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with a large color screen, would be in shops in the fourth quarter but did not specify in how many countries. It said volume deliveries would come in the first quarter of 2003.
Sony Ericsson has been steadily losing market share to competitors Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and Siemens, partly because it has been unable to deliver its phones in volume to shops in time.

I contacted SE Portugal and they told me the p800 will be available here in January 2003 (begining?middle?end? didn't say) and the price for a simlock free phone would be 859.90 Euros (a bit too high for me...
).

The P800 will be available starting Dec 20 in the Philippines. Our operators have been testing them.
