What phone are you using??
It's normally only 4 - menu, messages, create new & then SMS. Anyhow, try pressing the joystick left in standby, if you haven't set a shortcut, it'll ask you, and then you can choose the create new-option. You can also set it at either up, down or right movement in standby.

On the p1 you can add a short cut to New SMS onto the standby screen. Then it's only 1 click

I may translate this wrong, but it should be something like this:
Scroll to the icon spot you want to use on the standby screen and press "More" > Replace > Common Task > New SMS...or whatever ya want.

if you want to change one of the base 5 icons that are displayed on the screen then hilight it and click more > replace > common task > new SMS
that will give you 1 click access to create a new sms
alternatively if you want to use one of the extra icons then click the triangle pointing up above the middle icon on the desktop and click a new icon (diamond shaped). Then click common task > new SMS
this will require 2 clicks to create a new SMS because first you have to expose the extra icons

Better, you can create a shortcut to new SMS to a pre-selected person.
