> Britons sending 1bn texts weekly
Bookmark topic
BBC article
Britons are now sending more than one billion text messages per week according to the latest figures from the Mobile Data Association (MDA).
this is 25% up from last year and equal to the number sent in the whole of 1999
1bn texts a week is equivalent to 4000 texts
per minute!!!

Hi all,
I really find this quite amazeing and in the early days of GSM this is what helped put the Networks into profit due to IMO the rip off charges of sending a small data package and charging a disproportionate amount of money for it.
I think in the 22 years odd i have been using Mobiles i can count the number of texts i have sent on the digits on my hands and feet i HATE texts even if they are now much cheaper.
What really used to make me angry was the Mobile Data Association counts text as Data and used the text figures to suggest Data growth which IMO is and was totally misleading. Only now do i believe we are ready to see real growth in the data market due to HSDPA and the increased speeds as well as better and faster processors in our devices. Next year and onwards we really are going to start seeing a truly full and rich Internet experience on our devices.

I'm with you. I almost never send texts except in response to a text sent to me.
I much prefer to email or... dare I say it... call!
my son, on the other hand, probably contributes more than his fair share to this text count!

I think I sent half of them.
Now compare this to somewhere like the US where text messaging has only recently caught on. One billion a week is simply astounding and it showing no signs of letting up at all.
O2UK only recently announced 1000 minutes or texts for only £5.

Thats £1 per 200 texts if you were that addicted.

... and I bet at that price they're still making a huge profit !

@goldenface
But in the States Push To Talk is massive and here it's still virtually unheard of never mind used.
@Masseur
Well as i pointed out Texts use tiny Data packets so really can't cost the Network anything unless of course their is a termination charge by the receiving carrier but same Network texts to texts must be virtually cost free. Unless of course you accept the corporate argument of R&D, Maintenance etc etc.

in regards to termination charges I guess they balance out to some extent with texts going to/from all companies, though I wonder who wins in that respect... i.e. which network has more texts sent and which network has more received?
I expect that development costs would have been recovered years ago though I guess it would also cost to add more message centres to handle the increase in traffic.
The one thing that puts me off sms is in its name... Short! I'm not sure if it was designed to be short because of a lack of forethought, or perhaps because of the technology of the time, or simply because the GSM people decided users wouldn't want to say much via their phones, but it is about time to consider increasing the length.
Mind you, I guess the 160 character restriction has spawned a whole new language!

@Masseur,
Not forgetting of course the opportunity to charge more money for longer messages, bit like in the early days when we paid 25p per minute charged by the minute so a 1 minute 2 sec call cost 50p. Lets not forget the Networks are not our friends they really just want our money and as much of it as they can get, same as all the phone manufacturers do.

I'm currently sending about 60-75 a day SMS....
and we all know SMS within the Uk are pure pure profit, it cost the network next to nothing to send an SMS...
