BBC article

Google's dominance of the web will not translate to the mobile phone market, a senior executive at Symbian has said.
John Forsyth, vice president of strategy at Symbian, the platform that powers many of the world's phones, said Google lacked experience.

this relates to the recent announcement discussed in "The Open Handset Alliance - the first open, complete and free mobile platform" thread

I believe this comes under the heading of "well they would say that wouldn't they?"

I truly hope that google come up with something very new in concept, much in the way that Apple has with the iphone, but without all the 'security' restrictions imposed on 3rd party developers, I guess there's a fair chance of this as it's linux based. I'd love to see the day when if there's a feature missing in the software then a patch can be written by anyone with the programming knowledge.

The network providers wouldn't like it though and ultimately they have a big say in what makes it in mobile phone technology.

Well I think such pressure would be very short sighted, as a fully adaptable user interface would only serve to popularise the platform, and so increase the use of it. This can only be good for buisiness, don't you think?

As no two people use their devices in the same way, or for the same things, then why should they be forced to push the same buttons?

I see android as the linux of the mobile world. Its hugely customizable and makes logical sense for practically everyone to use, but its in that corner of the field where it will get hugely dominated by other existing operating systems.

Just because something has a better featureset doesn't mean it will do well. Hell the original razr was a craptastic phone and look how well it did.
You remember nokias first 3G phone, the leaf shaped one. See how badly that did

i hope for that with every OS...I hate it when something goes half way decent but is missing something important.

Anyway, for this I think it'll be more a matter of marketting as it was with the Razr and iphone

True, I guess we're all magpies (ooo! SHINY!!) to some degree

I do hope it'll encourage some good old fashioned competition in terms of the actual product though, as anything that causes the manufacturers to up their game can only be good for us. After all, when you strip all the packaging away what are you left with? It's either something you feel good about using or not, and it's this that inspires brand loyalty/future sales.
