I used my p1 on o2 for a while, often sending long texts. They were a bit slow sometimes but always seemed to get there.
Possibly just a blip in the o2 service?

Try playing around with the SMS Account configuration.
Maybe you changed something?
If eveything fails, delete the SMS account and ask you operator to send you a special Configuration SMS the phone recognizes and auto-configures for the correct operator settings.
