Hey all... noticed these on Ebuyer for £220

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134344

anyone know if they are any good.... obviously not for the gamers etc... but say for a mother who can hardly switch on a pc... was gonna buy a desk top but maybe this woudl be ideal for a starter pc for young peole or incompitant parents?

cyco, whats your view on these?

cheers all

Ooooh yes! This is the grown-ups version of the "$100 laptop", isn't it? To be honest, I'm a bit torn over them. They are great for non-technical users who just want browsing, email and office but I can't help thinking that a 4Gb drive and 7" screen is just a little too limiting.

Personally I'd spend a bit more and get a really low end desktop PC with vista home basic and a 15" screen. You could always stick Linux on it if they keep getting it spammed up.

Yeah, it's a tricky one. It's just that if they do eventually want to hook their digital camera or mp3 player up to it at any point, they might have problems what with the limited space and Linux os.

Having said that many people have trouble hooking cameras and mp3 players up to winders anyway...

Looking at the specs it has 3 USB ports so yes, there shouldn't be a problem with an external drive

Nah, the '$100 laptop' is the other name for the 'One laptop per child' project which aims to make and distribute basic computers to people in developing countries. The specs are practically the same as these asus machines and they actually cost nearer $180 at the moment.

You can't buy them as such however there is a charity project in the USA which is trying to offer them for sale at $400, the idea being that you actually buy two: One for yourself and the other one is donated to a child in a developing country.
