I'm pretty technically savvy in general, and I'm not afraid to have a go at something, but I know barely anything about phones.. I have seen mention of flashing phones to upgrade firmware, and I understand what that means, but I don't understand references to CDA etc, and I've never flashed a phone before. Any good guides around?
Can I still use the SE theme editor to create themes for a p1i? How would I go about that if P1i themes aren't an option within the theme creator?
Are there any existing good dark-ish free themes that I could use for it?
What about applications? The whole UIQ thing is still a bit confusing to me, is that just the OS? Will I be able to use any app designed for UIQ on it? Any particular apps you would recommend?

About UIQ...
Unlinke Windows and Macs, where the Operating System and the Interface is the same, on most of the rest the OS is a separate product from the interface.
Sony Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola smartphones use Symbian OS.
The Sony Ericsson and Moto interface is called UIQ, Nokia's called Nxx (etc)
The current Sony Ericsson UIQ version is 3.0
(which by the way is incompatible with applications compiled for older UIQs, like 2.1)
Resuming, search for "UIQ3" or "UIQ 3.0" on Google and you know those are applications that are suited for Sony Ericcson P990, M600, W950, P1 and W960.
Another thing you might want to know is that the Symbian OS v9.1 (the engine UIQ 3.0 works on) has a very strong integrated security, so the applications need to be Symbian Signed to be able to access critical stuff, like internet and personal information.
I hope this information is helpful

The CDA refers to a regional version control system that SE uses. Each firmware is released into CDAs, some are generic to all regions/tellcos others are specific to certain countries and certain operators. In the UK for example, O2 and Orange would have different CDAs because the firmware for each operator would be customised for that operator by SE.
Upgrading the firmware is simply a case of downloading and installing SEUS (Sony Ericsson Update Service link here
http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]&pid=10864&fid=21839&esi=true) and following the instructions you are given. A more complex task is to change the CDA of your phone so that you can remove any branding for your operator or to change to a generic version which will receive updates faster. To do that you will need to either use a pay service (which I did) such as Davinci
http://www1.davinciteam.com/index.html which will cost about 20euros for the p1. Alternatively there is a free program calls XS++, links to download and instructions can be found on this thread here

Themes can be found by searching google. You are better off searching for m600 themes - there are far more results than for the p1 and the m600 ones work fine on the p1. A good selection of SE ones can be found here

Hope this helps

Others have explained UIQ etc. etc. quite well - I recently made a dark theme for the P1, which you can download from my site:
free mobile themes - but yes, you can certainly use the SE Themes creator still.
Creating themes for UIQ is a bit more complex, a lot of the elements require multi-images in one bitmap. See my P1 Blog (link in sig) for some handy links.
