My camera recently seems to have developed what appears to be a focusing problem. In daylight conditions, where holding the shutter button halfway down would once result in a click, and a green focus indicator, now results in 3 or 4 clicks before focus is achieved. When taking photos indoors the phone seems to lock itself into some kind of constant focus loop where even after releasing the shutter button it sits there flashing its orange light and trying to focus for about 30 seconds. In dark conditions, like in a bar, the camera just flat refuses to even try focusing, pushing down the shutter button fully no longer seems to be able to force the camera to take an image like it used to.
Am I looking at a hardware or firmware failure here? Phone is out of warranty now so it looks like i'll have to purchase a new phone if it is the camera hardware packing up

I have the same problem. I checked key operation via service menu and it seems camera key is having bad contact. I took phone apart and am just about to spray some contact cleaning inside key. Will report if i get better result.
I had to clean joystick once just the same way and worked perfectly.

OK i have done it, it works flawlessly now. It was dust and age (2 years) that was causing metal plates in key no to connect properly. Just open the phone all the way so u get access to key itself and spray it all around with concat cleaner, then press key with some stick like 30 times or more so it get cleaned up from inside.
To check if your key is dusty too, go to service menu >*
Camera focus
Camera capture
If order is messed up camera key wont allways work.
Case closed for me
