A smartphone is a device which can act both as a phone and as a PDA (personal digital assistant). They most frequently have an extensive list of office features. (and other stuff normal multimedia phones may not have)
A symbian phone is a smartphone (not necessarily) that runs on the Symbian OS.
A PDA is a personal digital assistant. Not necessarily a phone (in the past). IMO, PDA's are obsolete.
A palmtop PC is like a mini-laptop. A cross between a UMPC (ultra-portable personal computer) and a smartphone/PDA.
A pocket PC is a portable device/computer that runs on the Windows Mobile OS(hence the name "portable
PC").

I'm sure people will pipe up with the official definitions, but here's the basics:
A smartphone is primarily a mobile phone but it also has some or all of the more advanced capabilities that you might find in a PDA. So what's a PDA?
A PDA (in today's terms) is basically a handheld computer. It's just one step down from a laptop computer really, with concessions made for the smaller screen, lower storage capability and limited input facilities. Tradtionally, a PDA was a simple device which offered calander applications, calculators and basic office applications but nowadays it's generally taken to mean a Pocket PC or other handheld (palmtop) computer. If you don't fancy carrying a laptop around, a PDA might be the answer providing that you don't mind losing some funtionality. Bear in mind though that a PDA does not have a built in phone. You need a smartphone if you want the best of both worlds.
Both smartphones and PDAs can use Symbian. Symbian is an operating sytesm, just like Windows, Mac OS or Linux. But it is designed to be small, lightweight and easily updatable so that it can run on mobile devices. Therefore a Symbian phone is just a phone (not necessarily a smartphone) that uses a variant of the Symbian Operating Sytem to make it work.
However, you can't install symbian on a windows pocket PC or vice-versa, or on any other device that does not support it for that matter. Neither PDAs / Handheld PCs nor smartphones offer you that kind of flexibility generally speaking.

Correct?
NO.
windows smartphones=touchscreen phones
although earlier windows smartphones didn't have touchscreen like "voyager" something, it wasn't really that popular. now all windows phones are touchscreen like HTC and dopod to name a few.
pocket pc=Touchscreen PDA, hence the name PC. it doesn't have the phone function.

@jemuel,
In no way do I imply my definition is right or consistant...isn't even mine - it's used by opera, handango etc, and yes, it's 'shaky'! But yours is plain wrong: i own (don't ask lol) a spanking new moto q9h, runs wm6, qwerty etc but no touchscreen... But google for windows smartphone, and the q will come up...pda also...
It's all vague, which is why I asked psycho for his opinion

You're both correct! Pocket PCs do not have a built in phone and so are really classed as PDAs, but both windows based smartphones and pocket PCs do generally have touchscreens these days, although not always
The main exceptions are lower-end windows based smartphones or specialist PDAs, some of which use trackballs instead. You're unlikely to find a non-touchscreen pocket PC these days though.
It can get rather confusing sometimes, I must admit
