Hello!

I'm from Sweden and I'm planning to make a trip to Australia soon. I want to be able to connect my laptop to the Internet through my t68 there.

How should I do? I mean; they don't have GPRS there do they?
Is it possible to just get an australian operator and an australian ISP and run or do I have to make something special? Does the ISP or GSM operator have to supprot something special etc.

Thanx*1000!

/Olle

Hey I'm from australia and yes we do have GPRS and yes your can connect your lappy up. All you have do is sign up with a mobile carrier such as; over here we have Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. I'm with optus and personally i think they are the better out of the 2 with support for various things. So when your over here give one of the providers a ring and they can start you up on a plan or maybe you have international roaming with one of your companies over where you are now. Anyways yes we can help you out with that one.

Yes, as mosh said - go with one of the 'big three' carriers over here - in fact I think they might be the only 3 true carriers (other providers lease the network from these carriers).

Here are the links to Australian GPRS information - personally I would choose Telstra as they have the greatest coverage and the most users:

Optus GPRS Information:

Vodafone GPRS information:

Telstra GPRS information:

Thank you guys!

You saved my day!

I'm going to stay there for just two months and will not have an adress or something simular to send a bill to... In Sweden we have something called "cashcard" wich means you get a SIM-card from one of the provider and then you "load" it with money.

For example:
I get a card at vodafone, I cannot use it until i load it with; for example 10 bucks. Then i can call for my 10 bucks. In that way i don't need any signups or bills.

Do u have that in australia aswell?

Thanx*1000

I think that's pretty much the same as 'pre-paid' mobile here in Australia - you buy these pre-paid starter packs that include the SIM card and credit (e.g. the starter pack costs $30 and includes $30 of calls). Then you can buy 'recharge' cards to add more money to your account.

The starter packs and recharge cards can be bought just about everywhere - supermarkets, postoffices etc. and are available in varying amounts and for the 3 main carriers.

Using this method you won't get a bill, but I'm not sure if they require an address when you activate your new SIM card - in any case I'm sure you could just make up an address as they won't use it for anything.

Ooh that is a good question actually... I know that GPRS is currently not available for Telstra pre-paid... Optus I am not sure of, but Vodafone says you can use GPRS with their 'No Plans' service, which is pre-paid.

So it looks like Vodafone (or possibly Optus) is the way to go! Would be nice if an Aussie pre-paid Vodafone user could confirm this...

Yeah!

And note that WAPPING through GPRS is'nt enough! I Want to be able to connect my computer to the Internet using my phone, prepaid card and GPRS!

In some cases with prepaid you can only WAP through GPRS, not surf the web.

ROAMING and/or using GPRS on PrePaid is still a subject in it's infancy. In Australia you will be able to connect on the internet using CSD (circuit switched data) but thats at 9600 baud (14.4 if God gets involved) I know of no Aussie Mobile carrier with PrePaid GPRS. I have setup a site that has PrePaid wireless rates and links and has a section just for Australia. I also will give you a link that has all the settings for programming your phone for Vodafone, TELSTRA, OPTUS. Good luck

PrePaid Site http://groups.msn.com/prepaidwireless

Phone SetUp Site

A good newsgroup to ask around the local phone geeks is aus.comms.mobile

There ya go G"Day and Good Luck

Well, wireless... the Vodafone website does state that GPRS is available on their 'No Plans' service - which is pre-paid. They just don't call it 'pre-paid'.

So unless they got it wrong...
