> O2 has activated just 26,500 iPhones
Bookmark topic
"Reliable channel sources" have informed The Register that O2 has activated just 26,500 iPhones since its launch 2 weeks ago, a figure well below the company's expectations.
Although we're still waiting for official figures, this is a lot lower than the first-weekend sales "guesstimates" of 100,000.
These same sources reveal that Carphone Warehouse, the retail partner for the iPhone in the UK, had 50,000 iPhones ready to go on launch weekend but sold only 11,000.
Because of how the iPhone is sold, activation figures, although interesting, are not truly representative of units sold as many phones may have been bought as Christmas presents, to be activated then, and many more may have been purchased to unlock, rather than work on the O2 network.

I see no surprise here. I mean, Europeans are a lot smarter than Americans when it comes to cell phones.

Europeans are not hood winked into buying something based on hype.
Looking at it more closely, the iphone isn't really the ultimate phone. It just got a very good interface, and maybe browser, apart from that, nothing out of the ordinary.
Maybe the next iphone would be all encompassing.

Btw 02 are crazy into thinking this handset is going to attract more customers, 02 ive got nothing personally biased about them but when it came to cancelling my contract with them I have never been so stressed out in my life "We Reward Customers with Loyalty" Yeah Stressing if you want to leave after 8 years Lmao!
02 Retentions are carnivores

I would have liked to have seen the iPhone do a lot better than this. I suspect sales will pick up at Christmas as this must be one of THE ultimate Christmas gifts.
After all is said and done though the price of it would make a King squint. Hopefully this might mean a nice big price-cut, which wouldn't be a bad idea if the rumoured 3G version is in development.

I wonder if 02 have any intentions of lowering the price that would make a big difference to some of those who want it, but again networks are stubborn Vodafone still want £400 for the N95-2 lol

The price is far, far, far, far too high for the european market. Certainly here in the UK, we're used to getting very high-spec phones for peanuts or even free, even on fairly low contracts, and long terms like 18 months are resisted too. For an 18 month, £35pm committment I'd expect the moon on a stick, and I would not expect to pay a penny for the phone, let alone £270!
The idea of paying big money for both the phone and the contract is totally alien, and very offputting. When you look at what's available for so much less elsewhere, it's no surprise that the "jesus phone" effect seems to have rapidly dried up. Personally, I couldn't care less about the UI when I can get a phone that does a lot more, for so much less.
In the US where the market is still a little immature, and people a little too willing to pay big money still, I'm sure Apple are raking it in - but over here, both they and O2 have gotten their sums wrong I think.

i agree that it is poor sales figures for the iphone but i believe things will change with a price drop in the january sales.the initial outlay of £269 on £35PM min contract is quite offputting for a lot of people.

The trouble is, the longer it's out, the more the hype fades, and the closer it's successor becomes - another good reason not to buy this one. It has some obvious flaws, particularly for the european market, that are bound to be fixed in "Iphone II" - and the chances are that will be announced in the new year too. Or at least, that's what prospective purchasers will be thinking...
I think next time around they just need to get realistic with the pricing, and actually compete on more than just hype. It can be the undisputed best phone in the world (which it isn't) and still not sell at half the price they're asking for it.
