Hello
I have been using P1 for a couple of days from now and I discovered two major drawbacks in comparison with older phones : Sony-Ericsson (my last SE was K750i), Siemens, Motorola, Nokia.
(1) Alarm not working when phone is switched off
(2) Sound Recorder CANNOT record anymore the conversation (as yet with the 5 seconds annoying bip)
I want to believe that this will be "fixed" with future software releases.
Cheers,
Marius

Unfortunately it won't be fixed as in

eyes it ain't broke!
You'll either have to live with it or get a different phone!

Do you know the meaning of SmartPhone?
Do you know what is a full featured Operating System?
Your phone is not that much different from a PC!
You don't expect Outlook to pop up alarms with your PC switched off, right?
Then you know why the UIQ smart-phones do not work if switched off.

UIQ phones never did, and never will.
They call it a security feature, but I think they are being paranoid.

Adenda:
Remember the Flight-Mode is a great power saving feature! The phone battery will last for days (personal experience).
If also mute the speaker (hold the # key on standby), your phone is virtually off.

Excuse me but from what i see my N80 doesn't need to start up the OS until i click Turn-On after the Alarm has gone off, so the UIQ phones SHOULD be able to sound the alarm EVEN when the phone is OFF.

Ninja,
(i) Nokia phones, with Symbian OS, are having this feature : alarm is starting while phone is off
(ii) I can start my laptop either from the BIOS, either through my network card
So get informed before you heavy-post !

I'm not saying that are not phones out there that have a *separate* hardware dedicated to alarms that do not rely on the operating system to start... BUT this has never been the way most smartphones work (UIQ, WM, etc). This is usually the way of simpler phones.
Have you taken a good look at the amount of hardware is compressed in the P1 shell? It even has a full querty and a radio for god sake!
I would not sacrifice the P1 size for having this extra hardware for playing alarms while the phone is off. It would be the most least used feature of the P1.
Besides, You don't need to ever turn off your phone. Use the flight-mode trick and you are on the right track.
I have a P1 and I never turned off the phone since I bought it some months ago. Of course the phone reboots while making a backup, but that's all.

Roughly speaking, alarms that activate when the phone is off are programmed into the phone BIOS (or whatever its equivalent is called). The BIOS timer wakes up the appropriate OS functionality when the alarm is activated.
The Symbian OS can handle OS-BIOS communications and wake-ups. What it needs is smart programming.
