Discuss here what are the reasons for the complete mess of the Iphone sellings in Europe and Midlle East area.
Here are what I think:
-Europeans preffer small phones,the iphone was too large
-2mp camera vs 3 and 5mp on many new ''traditional'' phone makers like nokia N95/N82/6500s...SE K800/k850/P1...
-Lot of freezing bugs
-Touch screen doesn't work in very cold places (5c and less)
-No Video Recording while it's something we (in this region) feel it's so basic.
-Iphone got success in NYC because it's their Aplle brand name,but here who cares??

The price would have to be a big factor.

Europeans are used to getting a lot more for their money. To pay £270 for a contract handset is an alien concept to just about everyone this side of the pond.

Agree with Goldenface 100%. There are various imperfections and missing features in the Iphone, but they might all have been tolerable if the price wasn't as obscenely high.

The minimum term of 18 months, the high tarrif, the network monopoly, AND the very high upfront cost - they just don't sit well together, certainly not in the european market. When you add the list of reasons why this phone isn't all that, the whole thing falls flat on its face.

in germany you used to get a unlocked iphone at t-mobile for 999euro

in france you get a unlocked iphone for 650euro

i expect apple to release a v2.0 or something within half a year in EU after current release of iphone.
since EU marked simple is different to the USA

uk r used to free phones, for a £35/45 tariff you can expect a high end handset for free plus a decent allowance.

iv notice deals on o2 online have got worse, i.e every handset used to be free on 12 month contract, now 18 months are the norm and alot of handsets you have to pay a small fee but there still ok deals.

pay as you go is very good value for money i.e
o2 and orange top up £10-£30 get free text to unlimted

vodafone have stop the clock and unlimited texts for £2.50 credit spend or calls/texts for £5

tmobile have free wkd text too if topup on fri

think cpw misleading customers may have put people off purchasing that was reported in the news where if you lost the handset you would have to buy a new handset and have two contracts

Put it this way, in the UK I could have jumped ship to O2 and paid £270 for the priviledge of being tied into an 18 month, £35pm contract on the Iphone, or I could do what I did - upgraded on Vodafone to another 12 month contract, at my current rate of £20pm (plus £7.50 internet bundle), and paid just £50 for a Tytn II.

Now okay, the Tytn II is a particular kind of smartphone that isn't going to appeal to everybody, but it's currently best in class (IMO) and incorporates a lot of high technology and useful functionality that the Iphone doesn't get close to. Would the Iphone have been £220+£6.50pm+6 months commitment better? Would it ****!

The current Iphone is already severely outdated compared to most of the competition now - in 18 months time current purchasers are really going to sick to the hind teeth of it.

if they had offered it £100 on the £35 or or free on the high end tariff i would think they would have alot more sales, because that would be like buying a ipod anyways.

200 texts is way too little for the majority of their target market i.e teenagers to middle aged when uk people are crazy about textings, they should have put the £35pm with 500 texts, it basically cost the network nothing and the high end with unlimited text with fair usage

you know, one thing that keeps being overlooked in these iphone threads is the software....do you guys honestly think apple are content to leave what is their top consumer product at the moment with the software it has....so much can be upgraded on the device with software, that im sure will satisfy a lot of buyers. You only need to look at Apple's ability to update desktop OS X with features, and the iphone does run OS X remember!
The next firmware upgrade will have quite a few improvements, so a lot of the comments relating to it being not bad for a first attempt, and its a looser device are a little premature to say the least...

Sure it doesnt have everything that everyone wants, tell me a phone that ever has....or ever will for that matter....theres always something missing for someone.

The facts are that the device is a first attempt, but we dont need an iphone rev 2 to make it better.....it not like we all go and buy iMac's when we need something a bit extra.

Give the device time and a year from now im sure things will be hugely different.

on a final point, those expecting a 3G iphone in january at macworld are completely out of touch. Do you honestly think apple would launch a 3G device so soon after the last €100 rebate kaos and only a few months after launching it in europe....apple are not stupid, it would kill sales of current units stone dead....this weeks brainless (or clever) attempts by AT&T boss to give Apple a kick in the teeth by announcing a 3G device is coming doesnt mean jan 08 poeple...wake up

Software upgrades could sort out the mess that is the iphone's SMS handling, and they could even see picture messaging added (though I doubt that), but they won't address major shortcomings like the 2G data connection. Whether Apple have a 3G edition in the immediate works or not, that is what a lot of sensible people are waiting for, and that's another thing killing their sales. People aren't stupid, they can tell an unfinished first attempt when they see one.
