Hi all
As many of you may know Nokia with the N95 8GB and now the original N95 have been able to implement Demand Paging in a Symbian 9.2 device. Something that none us expected to see in any device until they were running Symbian 9.3 or 9.5.
So my question is is this
Would Demand paging be a good thing for the current UIQ3 devices?
Would it offer any advantages and enhancements to current users?
As some appear to believe that Demand Paging is really of very little value and obviously i disagree with this opinion and feel they have failed to realise just what a step forward this is from Symbian 9.1's Ram Problems.

Dogman you mentioned demand paging improves battery life, but no where have i been able to see that it actually "does" improve. Can you please provide some 'evidence'?

from everything I have read the better battery life comes from the fact that the processor does not have to work so hard
I have been surprised at the 25% claim though and searching hard I have not come up with anything much that discusses this in more depth, though I am still intrigued.
I remember when microsoft introduced caching on hard drives in windows 3 and that really did make a big difference in both performance and laptop battery power

well symbian.com doesnt mention it in the benefits, neither does wiki and some other websites.

Demand paging is nice: but if a Dual CPU(one for powerful task and the other for basic and uses less power) is already implemented on the next UIQ phone what's the need for that? even so i even doubt the 25% claim to be very effective and accurate for other smartphone users around the world. hardware implementations is much more important and is always better than software(demand paging) imho

I should to do some research before commenting on the demand paging issue. However, although Intel has announced a dual core mobile processor which they claim uses very little power, we should remember that it is probably several years away from falling into our hands in a mobile phone.
Using simple logic, if Nokia have upgraded their devices to have demand paging, they probably saw some benefit in their tests. Hardwarewise, N95 and P990 are not that much different so the P990 could benefit as well. Having said this, there is no chance that SE will give us P990 owners such an upgrade. It is simply beyond their ability to do so.

Imho Dual core mobile is not years away for us. given the increasing demand for smartphones i'm sure that's possible

P990 upgrade will be possible if SE developers passed the P990 project to open source community developers which are lot more in numbers than them. if SE UIQ platform is only open sourced as some software analyst have advised, the sad UIQ story will be reversed to a brighter one

- this could also lead to the following SE J2ME mods(camdrivers, acoustics, menus etc) to be applicable for SE smartphones too

I think the 25% claim is more about improvement given by V20. Personally I can vouch for it as I am getting longer uptime./usage with the new firmware. I guess no one (except Nokia) will know how much of this 25% is really attributed to demand paging.
