I thought I bought an S710a, or so the eBay listing and description said. So you know, the S710a is the N. American cousin of the S700i; minus FM radio and 900 MHz, plus 850 MHz and EDGE.

I received a black, swivel phone alright... and it appears to work in what I think are 850-only coverage areas. It also seems to be pulling down WAP pages at EDGE speeds.

The Service Info reveals the model to be S710a, the firmware to be R2A016 (the latest Rogers (Canada) firmware according to this)... and the bands to be 900, 1800, and 1900

Either this is a bug in the firmware, or a flaw in the phone... or I received a black S700i reflashed with Rogers firmware.

Help! This was a (reputable?) eBay seller, and I have limited time in which to act if I was cheated.

There was no such phone as a black S700i. I should know because I searched forever for a black housing to replace my silver one. The S700i was in silver only and the S710a was only in black.

Pictures?

I seem to remember going on a forum once where somebody used to paint black S700i housings and maybe I am imagining it but I thought www.cnn.cn also did black housings for it!

I loved my S700i, still got it locked away protected, my fav SE phone of all time!

@ masseur, Lunion: Was that phone (black S700i) ever officially released and sold to the public, or are those just prototypes, demos, show pieces, etc.?

Also, does the Service Menu report on the phone itself, or what the firmware says about the phone? In other words, if an S700i is reflashed as an S710a, what model woulkd this menu report? What bands? Mine says the model is S710a, yet the bands are 900/1800/1900. These are mutually exclusive numbers.

thats a fake mate! the silver s700i and black s710 has the se brand name beside the se symbol on the battery cover. the keypad is the wrong colour and and the screen housing looks suspect. seems to me that that yours has been very carefully painted black and flashed to an s710. god knows why!

I think perhaps your phone is a S710a and its fine. Maybe it says 900, but if it seems to work, then its probably 850 so does it matter? Does anything not work? If it works fine, then don't worry!

I believe it says 900 because they probably took the firmware from a S700i and editted it and forgot to change it to 850.

No, I think I have in fact been scammed by "mrwireless," the eBay "Power Seller" (LOL) selling these mock-S710a's as eBay item 290188060456:

box lacks label with phone's model, serial number, IMEI number... stolen goods, perhaps? (I know, this should have been my first clue)
box clearly comes from an S700i (silver phone pictured; FM radio advertised), with a cheap "S710" sticker stuck on
same as above for owner's manual
phone's physical finish is faked: inauthentic texture, faded icons (as if filled in with paint), knicks in finish with S700i-like silver showing through
phone's service menu shows rest-of-the-world (NOT North America)
900/1800/1900 coverage, though the listing of course says otherwise

I have to wait until they open today to call them. Their e-mail address conveniently says to do so. If I don't get my money back, then eBay will find out about this scam artist.

And to borrow from Mr. Garibaldi of Babylon 5 fame: "Never, ever, ever trust eBay. I swear, someday I'm going to have that tattooed inside my eyeballs."

Ok yeah. NOW that sounds like you've been had.

Good luck with sorting this thing out!
