This is my first Symbian phone and after the latest OS update the phone is now performing very well. But I am a little confused as to the usefulness of folders in applications like Contacts Tasks and Calendar.

Being a user who syncs with MS-Outlook it would have been useful if the phone Calendar folders related to different Outlook calendars and maybe allowing me to colorize the calendar entries.

The same goes for the Contact application, in Outlook I have current and old contact folders.

For me there seems to be no use for these folders, what are people using them for?

Well, for messages you could store messages about a certain subject in a folder with that subject name. Or from a certain person in a folder with that persons name. It's more about structure and organising your stuff I'd say.

Yes I agree, I stored my network setup SMS messages in a different folder for future reference. Since upgrading to the latest OS, I used them to setup my phone. I also have a folder for jokes I receive over SMS.

But I do not see any real use for 'folders' in the contacts or calendar applications. They do not have any relevance to the desktop calendar or contacts applications we would use on a PC or Mac.

It would have been nice for the Folders to relate to the different Calendars in iCal on the Mac, including colour coding. For the contacts I would like to also carry around old contacts or contacts regarded as out of date, it would have been nice for a contacts folder to relate to a different address book in Outlook.
