Hi guys - I thought you would be good people to ask so here goes...

My wife has a project to run which will require a phone dedicated to it. Must be stable, good battery life, take calls and be good for texts. - She is not an experienced texter - anyway looking on ebay the price of P910s is pretty low at the moment ~ £30 to £50 - so looks good.

P990i s are going from £60 - £100 AFAIK - I love the look of the P990 - but there have been alot of points raised about problems with them and Sony not finishing the OS properly - does this cause problems in normal use? - or only for 'enthusiasts' - I thought maybe pay the extra and go for the 990 - if not for her then for me

Then again the P1 has what I REALLY want - good camera, Wifi and lots of onboard memory... - going for ~ £180 - £200 should I cut out the middleman and the frustration and just spend all my Christmas money on the latest and greatest? - don't really like the look and have heard the QWERTY keys are tricky to use - or is it a case that with practice they are OK...

Any advice or experience (or cheap phone links ) appreciated.

Also need cheap basic phone for 11 yr old son - advice on that appreciated too...

Thanks

Mick (still with P905, but cannot use cool blue lit flip now due to contacts breaking )

If you have the cash, go for the P1...i mean, the P990 with latest firmware is a good device for its current price, however, the P1 isn“t expensive either, and offers some killer advantages:

smaller, lighter

better screen - can be used under intensive light

lots and lots of RAM - this is really what sets it apart from the P990...imagine being able to run everything you want at same time, while in the

P990 you have to choose what you keep open to not run out of memory

3MP camera

materials used - killer rubber and metal combination...its very built and robust

The P910i is a awesome bit of kit i still use mine, some phones cant even do half the things this beast came out with nearly 3 ears ago, ok the camera is shabby, but it isnt supposed to be a camera phone, personally i wouldnt touch the P990i just stay way clear, everyone raves about the p1 on here but i got put of by the keypad, the p910i got me hooked on the big screen, then again there is the M600i, but if the P1i has dropped its price that much i dont see why you would put money in a old hat !!!!

I say get the P1i because as mentioned the RAM is twice as much as the P990i.Also throw in the 3.2mp camera (mines only 2mp but it takes awesome pics) I on the other hand have never had half the issues most people talk about when it comes to the P990i and am planning to keep this phone as long as it allows me.Not even tempted to upgrade to any of the 'GIANTS' out there at the moment. Its strong, great build quality and mines pretty stable.Using it sensibly you'll have no problems. But for power hungry users the P1i is the safer bet.Hey,why not get 2 P990i's (one for you and one for her) instead of the P1i Good luck in making your decision and when you hear stuff like 'stay far away from the P990i' don't take it to much to heart. Its an emotional statement, bandwagon stuff.

Hey,
personally would advice P990
with WorldGeneric.
Especially with dual-hardware construction, Flip open/close,
It's a huge advantage,
Can be used one handed and with touch screen.
Also separate lock key,
and Search through contacts (missing in P1).
P990 as for me is rock stable.

Personally, I find the P910's QWERTY keyboard better for texting than the P990's but I think I'm in a minority there

If stability is a big issue then you'd probably still be better off with a P910 to be honest. As already mentioned, a P990 is fine providing it's been fully updated but I really can't remember my P910 crashing at all and I used it heavily for the best part of 2 years!

But yes, if you've got the cash then go for the P1i. It's definitely the best of the three

For your son I would say K200/K220 are nice options...

For your wife I think a P910 is ok...

For you I would say that RAM will be the main problem if you go for P990... Otherwise it's a great phone...

As for P1, it's the best P-series phone yet... If you can spend money on it then go for it... I tried it few days back and I must say the keyboard is better than P910/P990... It may require getting used to for some but I was very much comfortable even at first try...

Well I've nearly had them all (P800,P910i,P990) just getting the W960i yesterday so likely be selling the P990i soon.

I didn't go for the P1i as I didn't like the look of it and I don't need or use the built-in keyboards prefering JOT handwritting.

My P990i is the World generic one & with the latest firmware is good and stable so long as you don't want to do too many things at once (still can't browse the web & listen to music without one or the other closing). You can live with it though.

The extra RAM in the W960i (and therefore P1i) makes a big difference to the useablity of the phone as does the improved implementation of the today view. Can't open enough things to fill the memory.

If you don't need 3g or a good camera I still think the P910i is one of the best I've used and still think the useablity of the UIQ3 series was a step backwards compared to the 5 way jog dial & apps on the P910i.

Size also comes into it. In my view the P910i/P990 and most Windows smart phones are too big especially for confortably placing in a pocket etc. The W960i/P1i are a perfect size & weight considering the complexity of them.

Think between the 3 I'd have to recommend the P1i even though I don't like the look of it myself. The W960i is only just out so a Premium price (I paid £415 SIM free).

The W960i isn't too bad a price compared to a SIM free P1i considering your getting the 8GB dive built-in (£274 for SIM free P1i +£62 for 8GB m2 card = £336). Well that's what I keep telling myself anyway
