Hi there,

I've just unbranded my K850i from the Orange network but am curious as to what the small letter G (in a circle) by the signal strength bars means as it is continually on after debranding, where as with Orange it would only appear now and again.

I am also now getting a small letter E (within a square) by the signal bar, which I never had before.

Would be greatful if anyone can shed light on what they mean and why they are appearing. By the way I have disabled the 3G option in my setting to get rid of that icon.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply...I know I'm taking a risk in asking this next question and may get shot down in flames for doing so rather than Googling it...but what the hell...what exectly are GPRS and Edge...and is it normal to have the icons there, especially the G which was hardly there when Orange branded the phone.

Many thanks for the link...

Am I safe to assume that I am not incurring any call / data charges unless I see the world icon next to the signal bars as Gprs is continuously on.

Cheers

Edge is simply the newer brother/sister of Gprs, which for some countries translate to 2.5G(SM)... beyond 2.5 comes the high-speed data transfer protocols such as 3G (video-conferencing and some), etc.

these mainly pertain to data transfer protocols and you are not being charged for costs. daviep is definitely right, unless the globe/world icon is present, then you are not being charged by your telecom... hth. cheers!
