Hi.

Mobile Broadband is being touted as THE big thing in 2008.

I would like to know if anyone is using this yet and is the speed they are getting (3G / 3.5G ) good enough to replace their fixed line broadband service.

Thanks.

Hi GoldenFace,

I believe currently the Networks are offering up to 3.6mbps HSDPA and some users seem to be getting over 3 mbps speeds, next year they are due to offer up to 7.2mbps although besides the USB Modems few devices are able to support this as yet.

As newer devices reach us that do support this speed you will indeed IMO be able to get speeds that are in excess of those offered by many Home Broadband suppliers. For instance i am with BT Broadband and my package offers up to 8mbps i am also less that half a mile from the exchange and the last time i tested it i was getting approx 3.5 mbps.

Although not all Home broadband suppliers are the same and these speeds are also set to increase the price difference and speed offered by the Mobile Networks could well offer faster speeds then your Home set up dependant on Network cover of course.

Personally i think next Year will be very exciting as well as the increased HSDPA speeds our devices will get better screens and more powerful processors and better graphics the Mobile Broadband Internet will become a reality a far cry from 02 and Wap with there claims of the Internet on your Mobile as IMO this time it really will deliver.

Marc

Thanks Marc.

I get the same results with my home connection. I'm with Sky Broadband 16MB and I have only ever seen
I'm looking forward to 2008 and currently Ofcom is recommending an overhaul of how broadband suppliers advertise their MB speed which is a good thing, may be even charging us depending on what our average monthly speed downlink is, would be a good idea.

In Sweden We have allready 7,2 Mbps. I have one of those modems, works fine, but in the wall is 100 Mbps waiting, so I use that instead

there is a Samsung hsdpa 7.2mbps compatible phone down here through Telstra, though im not sure whether Telstra are supporting that speed as yet i know they are doing 3.6mbps, but again, if its gone faster i dont know. They are using the Ericsson build HSDPA network!

I have ditched the landline completely. My wife and I have Vodafone phone accounts and we have a 1GB/month data plan which has 16 months of the 24 month term remaining.

We use a USB plug-in device called a Vodem which enables GPRS/3G/3.5G connection speeds of up to 3.6Mbps in our area. That's a peak speed, the reality is more like 0.8-1.4Mbps which is very usuable as I just surf and don't upload large files or anything.

My goal for 2008 is to upgrade to a Vodafone 3G Wireless Router. This is a wifi router which has a 3.2Mbps 3.5G PCMCIA card inserted in it. The intention is to have my Laptop and futures devices such as N95, iPod Touch or a Wifi compatible feature phone all browsing via the same data account...

I will be keen to see if a 7.2Mbps PCMCIA card is on it's way. It'll help justify the cost of the upgrade to the missus'

Vodem... I always hated that name

Do you find that many people don't want to call you though, having no proper landline? I find a lot of people are hesitant to call a mobile here in NZ because of the costs!

I'm also on Sky Broadband although with a top ever speed of 5.5mb, which I believe also is rather pathetic considering this speed is aproximatly 1/3 of the advertised speed, althougn this is really fast enough for every day useage.

As soon as we start to see more devices with support for 7.2mb HSDPA I'm prety sure I will be trying that out (depending on useage limits and charges anyway)

in k.s.a. its becoming a fad. i have 5GB bundle for 200SR. around 53USD per month. big enough. i can watch youtube. its really pathetic that actually were not getting the 7.2 mbps yet advertised as such. I can use it in my fone. i can send SMS. without voice calls anyway. Just to mind you, its very dependent to location. as not all towers in the country could offer the 7.2signal.

Im with Sky 16mb too and on average i get about 10/11 mb, which is ok i think but still isn't the advertised 16mb. Do you find that you router gets over hot? Mine does and i need to turn it off and let it cool down as it hinders the speed i get, just did a tests now and im only getting 417 kbps.

As for mobile internet i think it is the big thing for 2008, a few people at uni already have it, for me if i can get the max 3.6 mb for say £10 a month is when i would switch. But then what about online gaming, xbox live?
